David Canter joins editorial board of AnnArbor.com

By Tony Dearing

David Canter, director of healthcare research at the University of Michigan's William Davidson Institute, has joined the editorial board of AnnArbor.com. He is one of two community members serving on the board on a rotating basis.

The editorial board discusses local issues and formulates the editorial position that AnnArbor.com takes on those issues. Our weekly editorial appears in print and online every Sunday. The editorial board also includes community member Mary Cullen Guttman, as well as Matt Kraner, Laurel Champion and Tony Dearing of the AnnArbor.com staff.

Canter joined the William Davidson Institute in December 2008 and leads an initiative studying how health-care businesses evolve in developing countries. Prior to that, he was a senior vice president for Pfizer and director of Pfizer's research facility in Ann Arbor prior to its closing. He was responsible for the development of several medicines, including Lipitor, the world's best-selling drug.

Canter serves on the boards of the University Musical Society and Greenhills School, and is a trustee at Cleary University. In the past, he has served on the boards of Washtenaw United Way, the NEW Center and Emerson School. For six months in 2008, Canter lived and worked in Rwanda as a Pfizer Global Health Fellow. He also is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in London, and has degrees from Cambridge and Liverpool Universities.

Canter replaces Albert Berriz, who recently stepped down from the AnnArbor.com editorial board. The editorial board will be adding one more community member in the near future, and that new member will be announced shortly.
