The Potting Shed voted best nursery/garden store; this week, vote for best place for happy hour

By AnnArbor.com Staff

What’s the best nursery/garden center in Washtenaw County? The voters in AnnArbor.com’s BestOf contest say it’s The Potting Shed, which won with 143 votes, leading Abbott’s Landscape Nursery and Garden Center, in second place with 128 votes.

Best nursery/garden store voting began last Sunday and ended at 11:59 p.m. Saturday.

After the first couple of days, the lead contenders rose to the top. Abbott’s Landscape Nursery and Garden Center took first place and remained there throughout most of the week.

Over the latter part of the week, it was a close race between The Potting Shed, Abbott’s and Pot & Box. On the last day of voting, The Potting Shed moved into first place, putting Abbott’s Landscape Nursery and Garden Center in second and Pot & Box in third, earning 113 total votes.

This week’s contest is for best place for happy hour.

It’s 5 o'clock somewhere! On those weekdays when we find ourselves needing to chase away the tedium of everyday life with discounted pints (or liters) of fermented deliciousness, there’s nothing like a good happy hour. Whether you’re in it for the marked-down martinis or the half-price hors d'oeuvres, Ann Arbor’s got a happening happy hour scene.

If you’re happy and you know it, cast your vote!

What’s your favorite place for happy hour?

Readers can suggest contenders for upcoming contests by going to http://www.annarbor.com/bestof/#bestof_schedule.

And don't forget, everyone who votes will be entered into a drawing each week to win a prize. This week's prize is a $50 gift card to a local spot for happy hour.

Well, now I've heard of the Potting Shed. But Abbott's is the place to shop for your garden if your garden is an actual garden with landscaping, plants and trees, etc.

This years faux paux is ok. Just don't forget to include all the home based medical marijuana nurseries and grow co-ops on next years best of list.

Thank you for expressing your views regarding the inclusion of The Potting Shed in the BestOf contest for nursery/garden store. The BestOf lists are compiled using a variety of research sources. Some of these include online review sites, suggestions from AnnArbor.com site visitors as well as nominations in the 2010 Community Choice Awards. The Potting Shed, while not exclusively a garden store, has a garden area featuring garden plants, some decorative gardening tools and garden art. It received some positive online reviews in this regard. AnnArbor.com publishes the BestOf list each week simply as a list of contenders. Ultimately the community decides the winner. We appreciate your feedback and will be careful to consider whether a contender's business is a true match for the category.

I live in Chelsea, I shop at the Potting Shed, I like the Potting Shed, but it's NOT a nursery. I find its inclusion in a "best garden center" poll extremely odd.

How totally bizarre. That's a gift shop. Sounds like something really shady went down. Maybe you should ask the owner how this happened, considering that store is not a nursery??!

john - the geography for the AnnArbor.com BestOf contests is Washtenaw County. A description of "how this works" can be found here: http://annarbor.com/bestof/how-this-works/

I guess all of those voters missed the part about "Vote for best Nursery/Garden Store". There weren't too many Nurseries on the list. I guess I messed up by voting for my favorite one.

I heard that in a similar fashion to many of our politicians, they were giving out discounts to people who voted for them. By the way, Banotai Greenhouse on Rwasonville road south of 94 is the best place to go in the county.

81wolverine - Thank you for expressing your concern regarding potential ballot stuffing. As we developed the BestOf polling technology, we've implemented safeguards to address potential ballot stuffing.

81wolverine. That is a possibility. As with many contests, we have seen that some contenders in these contests do promote themselves to their supporters throughout the week of voting.

I'm sure you're right. However, it's just hard for me to believe that given the large population difference between Chelsea and Ann Arbor that more people would have chosen The Potting Shed over all the larger, more traditional garden centers in Ann Arbor such as Turner's, Abbots, Lodi Farms, English Gardens, and Downtown Home and Garden. Could there have been a local networking effort from the Chelsea area to increase the number of votes perhaps? Given the relatively low number of votes that determined the outcome, I don't believe this is out of the realm of possibility - do you?

Correct me if i am wrong but i thought this was the best of Ann Arbor not Chelsea, I think it is completely ridiculous. Abbott's Landscape is a real nursery and will forever be the best of ANN ARBOR to me. I think we can all agree the potting shed should no have won and does not deserve this title.

That should have said "how viable retailers in the city would be ... without ....."

I'm not sure how viable retailers in the city of Ann Arbor without the shopping dollars contributed by the surrounding communities like Chelsea, Dexter, Ypsilanti, Saline, Whitmore Lake, etc. But maybe AnnArbor.com could start blocking the IP addresses of anyone who logs in but doesn't live in Ann Arbor in order to give you that true "Best of Ann Arbor" result. And then certainly they shouldn't accept any subscriptions from them ....

Very strange results considering the Potting Shed is more of a gift shop/florist than a garden center. Someone stuffing the ballot box maybe?

This place (Potting Shed) is not even a garden store; it certainly is no nursery. Better category matches, please.

And if it makes a difference to anyone anymore, all but about 4 places on the entire list are merely "plant dealers" who don't actually 'grow' anything.
