Catching up with John Hansen, interim president of the Ann Arbor Area Chamber of Commerce
John Hansen, new interim president of the Ann Arbor Area Chamber of Commerce, continues to settle into the role, which we reported when the announcement went out on Aug. 14.
Since then, many in Ann Arbor have had the chance to hear or read some of his thoughts about the time he'll serve in the position. Top of the list is the day-to-day running of the office. So is helping the board work on both the process and requirements for finding a new president, as he outlined with Martin Bandyke on his WKQL-FM radio show this week.
I just caught up with him this afternoon during a congratulatory call, and learned that the Chamber started today to set up its Visioning Team to define the goals for hiring a new president.
Co-chairs Deb Power of Power Marketing and Research and John Petz of Domino's Farms will lead the committee, and members of the community will be invited to join, as well.
His voice the process, Hansen said, will focus on just that: Process.
"I'm not a member of the business community," he said. "I'm an organizational kind of person ... I can help along the way, structurally."
He didn't sound convinced that there's a divide between the traditional business world and the entrepreneurs running emerging tech companies in the city. Instead, he said, the Chamber simply continues to face business evolution, as it has over 90 years.
As Chamber Board President Karl Couyoumjian told Business Review reporter Nathan Bomey recently about the need to connect with a younger membership base: “I think our new president is going to need to be somebody that can embrace that. They’re going to have to be able to connect with a diverse group of business types and styles.”
And Hansen said: "Being adaptable is the answer."
Among Hansen's other media coverage are a Q&A with Andy Chapelle of Crain's Detroit Business , a story in the A2Journal, and a visit on LucyAnn Lance's Business Insider on WLBY-AM.

It would be good to include a photo, so we would have some idea who is. Also, perhaps a bit of his background would be good. Goals and ideas...blah, blah, blah.
