Ann Arbor's Beyond Juice reopens Friday under new ownership

New owners will re-open Ann Arbor’s Beyond Juice Friday after the downtown juice and sandwich bar was closed for more than a month.

Plymouth residents Maureen and Michael Policella took over the store at 529 E. Liberty St. earlier this month from former owners Bob and Sally Goldman, who opened it in July 2008.

“I’m just a huge advocate of juicing,” Maureen Policella said. “It’s healthy, and it’s a great natural energy boost.”

The license agreement with Beyond Juice lets the couple serve "Meals in a Cup,” juices made of raw fruits, vegetables and a special formula it says contains all the daily vitamin and mineral requirements set by the United States Department of Agriculture.

The couple tried to start a new franchise in Plymouth last winter, but said the bad economy prevented it from opening. Beyond Juice, Michael Policella said, approached them to take over the Ann Arbor operation after the Goldmans no longer wanted to keep it.

Though the couple said they plan to keep the restaurant mostly the same, patrons may notice a few changes and a few new recipes.

“We’re just going to emphasize the raw juice a little more,” Michael Policella said.

Maureen Policella said she plans to offer her own special concoctions including the “Whoo Haa,” a blend of carrots, dandelions, beets, garlic, apples, lemon, kale and parsley, and the “Dandy Bella,” a combination of tomato, celery, beets, dandelions and kale.

Michael Policella said he plans to be more health-conscious when purchasing fish for the restaurant’s sandwiches and salads and buy only low-mercury tuna and wild salmon from American waters, which he says, contain fewer pollutants.

Beyond Juice plans to open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
