Art Van Furniture acquires Mattress World in Michigan retail deal

By Nathan Bomey

Warren-based furniture store chain Art Van Furniture has acquired Howell-based Mattress World in a deal that allows Art Van to extend its sales reach beyond Michigan for the first time in its 52-year history.

Art Van said in a press release that it would "retain Mattress World's talented team" of about 100 employees. One of Mattress World's 21 Michigan stores is located on Washtenaw Avenue in Ann Arbor. The retailer also has seven stores in Indianapolis.

The deal comes as Art Van has already been rebranding its mattress departments as Art Van PureSleep. The company, which also opened three standalone Art Van PureSleep stores, may rebrand some Mattress World stores as Art Van PureSleep "where it makes sense," officials said.

“In terms of business, it makes great sense for us," said Art Van Elslander, founder and chairman of Art Van Furniture, in a statement. "Mattresses are one of our core businesses. Art Van is the number one furniture store mattress retailer in the state, this now positions us to be the number one specialty mattress store in Michigan."

Art Van also operates a store on Eisenhower Parkway in Ann Arbor.

Good for Art Van and not good for consumers. They just purchased probably their main compeitor. i purchased my last mattress set at Mattress World when they had about 6 stores, but I probably won't buy my next one there.
