Borders book store as destination for familial reconciliation? Kanye West says so

By Nathan Bomey

Borders Group Inc. may be struggling to get customers, but one high-profile entertainer views the Ann Arbor-based book store chain as a destination for reconciling with his family.

Sort of. Rapper Kanye West makes a reference to Borders in the song "All of the Lights," which is part of his new album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy."

"Restraining order / Can't see my daughter / Her mother, brother, grandmother hate me in that order / Public visitation / We met at Borders / Told her she take me back / I'll be more supportive," West raps.

It's unclear whether Borders is welcoming the publicity. A spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to an e-mail requesting comment.

An anonymous blogger at the popular "I Work At Borders" blog suggested that it could have been worse.

"At least he neither cursed at us or implicated us in an implausible sex act," the blogger wrote.

"All of the Lights" also features performances by Elton John, Fergie, Kid Cudi, Alicia Keys and Rihanna.

West's CD is available for $12.79 at Borders.com, a 20 percent discount.

At online arch-competitor Amazon, it's $11.99.

@Nathan Bomey Why do you write about Borders Group Inc. so frequently? I hope that your readers recognize that you are not a retail book industry analyst. Further I hope you know that you loose credibility as a regional financial news reporter when you write so many negative articles about one particular company. Try focusing some of your attention towards other public traded corporations within this area. For instance, Conway Freight, who's headquarters is located on the north side of Ann Arbor, fired their CEO and enacted a hiring freeze this past summer. Somehow that news slipped past your radar screen.

Hi There I found your post is misleading. Have you ever shopped at Borders? If you are a Borders member (free), when you purchase this CD, you will get 33% more discount when you present your coupon you received from e-mail(online works too). The price will be 10.71. For a Border plus member, you get an additional 10%(as I am ). The final price will be ONLY 9.64. I LOVE shopping with Borders, in fact, their prices are CHEAPER than Amazon. West's CD is available for $12.79 at Borders.com, a 20 percent discount. At online arch-competitor Amazon, it's $11.99.
