Busch's closing pharmacies at all its stores

By Cindy Heflin

Busch’s Fresh Food Market will close the pharmacies at all its stores by Oct. 21, Dexter Patch reported.

The company cited the changing healthcare industry and the “complexities of managing a prescription-pharmacy business” as reasons for the decision, the news website reported.

The Ann Arbor-based company has 15 stores, but not all of them have pharmacies. In July, the company announced plans to open a 16th store in a building that formerly housed a Farmer Jack store in Canton.

In Ann Arbor, Bush’s store on Green Road has a pharmacy, but the one on South Main Street does not. Stores in Dexter and Saline have pharmacies.

The company said CVS and Rite-Aid pharmacies would handle customers’ prescriptions after Oct. 21, Patch reported.

Any former pharmacy customers of Busch's should consider Dexter Pharmacy or Pharmacy Solutions on Jackson Road in Ann Arbor. Both great, customer-oriented, education-based pharmacies.

In Ann Arbor, Bush's store on Green Road has a pharmacy, but the one on South Main Street does not. Stores in Dexter and Saline have pharmacies. Hi again. Please fix this sentence AGAIN, then you can delete my comment. Since you missed it the first time Busch's is mis-spelled. Thanks. ;-)

That's to bad, but I don't like CVS in Saline as their help is not very nice.

Obama at work. ...another evil business out of the way. I hope those who will soon be unemployed go collect their obama bucks, obama phones and shovel ready green jobs. Worst president in a century.

I liked being able to pick up my Rx at the same time I shop. Saves time. Kroger, here I come.

Sat, Oct 13, 2012 : 1:35 p.m.

It'll just be a matter of time when they drop them to.

Sat, Oct 13, 2012 : 4:08 a.m.

If you actually were doing your shopping at Busch's, I doubt you'll be switching to Kroger.

We will miss the excellent service provided by Amy in Dexter. She would be a great addition at any local pharmacy. @ Ann English - there is no CVS within walking distance in Dexter. The Dexter Pharmacy is probably 3/4 of a mile from Busch's. So if you live in Dexter, this business decision knocks out one of the two truly local options - and the only real reason I ever went to Busch's.

I go to Busch's for their groceries...not their pharmacy.

Sat, Oct 13, 2012 : 1:55 a.m.

So much for Obama care, it's just a start.

Sat, Oct 13, 2012 : 1:44 p.m.

WALKER, none of that seems to have any bearing on a local pharmacy in a grocery store. The stores being pushed as new resources have the same regulations as Busches. Were you happier (if you are ever happy, it sure does not seem like it) when Other People had to pick up the tab for people without insurance? Did Obamacare cause the closing of the Saline Busches?

Sat, Oct 13, 2012 : 11:41 a.m.

It has to do with the new taxes, manufactures have an increase of $27 billion tax increase, that means you pay for the added cost when you pay for prescriptions, they don't get cheaper when you increase the cost to do business. $52 billion Pay or play tax if you employ more than 51 people you the company must pay or play, you must provide Obama care to employees, if you do not you will be taxed $2,000 per if you do not provide, if employee uses ObamaCare tax credit the employer still pays a penalty. The bottom line is that all the added costs to employ workers is going to be added to the bottom line and cut into profits. Last time I checked if you have a business you have to make money.

How so? Obama care had nothing to do with filling prescriptions... Unless you're referring to the Bush/Republican Medicare Plan D which was pushed through congress and unpaid for to the tune of billions and billions of dollars

In general, when a pharmacy closes, other pharmacies bid for their prescription records and any remaining prescriptions with refills go to those pharmacies. However, the patients whose prescriptions are affected do not have to go to the CVS or Rite Aid pharmacies that are mentioned. They can be transferred to the pharmacy of their choice. Also, I can certainly understand their statement about the "complexities of running a prescription-pharmacy business." Insurance companies are offering lower reimbursement rates to pharmacies, and government programs are looking for ways to take back payments from pharmacies for prescriptions billed to them.

I think people who don't want to deal with limited pharmacy hours prefer 24 hour CVS. Other people may prefer filling prescriptions in larger, general merchandise stores such as Meijers. Busch's will probably benefit more from enlarging other grocery and personal product areas.

Sat, Oct 13, 2012 : 12:06 a.m.

Busch's had pharmacies?

Discounting all the trolls making political comments, this should be no surprise when there is a CVS-Walgreens-Rite Aid located just about as thickly as Starbucks in NYC. Grocery stores should concentrate of the things they do best and leave the pharmacies to drug stores, which are bad at selling groceries.

I have noticed CVS pharmacies within walking distance of the two Ann Arbor Busch's locations and the Dexter location. Coincidence, I say.

There is no CVS nor other chain pharmacy anywhere near the Dexter Busch's store. I would agree with Tom Swift on directing customers to other local businesses like Dexter Pharmacy. This supports local businesses and helps keep the local economy strong. The Dexter Pharmacy on Baker provides fantastic service to their customers.

Too bad they could not transfer to local phamas instead of big controlling chains.

Busch's? Busch's Pharmacies? Nobody cares....seriously.

Sat, Oct 13, 2012 : 1:17 a.m.

Very mature attitude, Abe. I'll bet the pharmacy staffs who have just lost their jobs certainly care. You certainly don't have to, but understand that this does negatively affect a considerable amount of people.

I read an d commented because I CAN. I can do what I want. When I want. And how I want to do it. Sometimes for no reason.

If no one cares, then why did you read and take a moment to comment upon this story? Seems that something was of interest to you. It's also good to have this kind of information shared amongst the community, especially those who are patrons. That is what news is - items that are new or changing in the community.

It's a shame that they are directing customers to the chain pharmacies, instead of a locally owned store (Such as Dexter Pharmacy)... You would think that a locally owned company like Busches would realize the value of supporting other locally owned businesses. And, I see the tea party folks are trolling the forum with outlandish statements with no facts to back them up... probably learned that from Ryan, eh?

I should read comments before I comment - so ++ your comments and -- mine for redundancy.

Settle down Tom. No need to get your panties in a bunch or bring politics into this. Besides, don't get mad because Obama and Biden were eaten alive in the debates.

Fri, Oct 12, 2012 : 9:46 p.m.

Busch's is a good outfit, I shop there all the time. Never could figure why they had an RX shop, guess they were just following The Big Grocery Chains. For me, somehow, buying groceries does not connect with going to the pharmacy. Good to see the RX depart.
