Business leaders: Who's doing what in the greater Ann Arbor area
The following is a list of achievements by businesses and individuals in the Ann Arbor area:
PEOPLE
• Gov. Jennifer Granholm announced the following appointments and reappointments: Citizen-Community Emergency Response Coordinating Council: Stewart C. Wang, M.D. of Ann Arbor, director of the University of Michigan Trauma Burn Center and professor of surgery, was reappointed to represent individuals with technical expertise related to emergency response, term expiring December 31, 2012. Michigan Higher Education Assistance Authority: Harvey Hollins III of Belleville, vice president of government and community affairs at Wayne State University, was reappointed to represent Wayne State University, term expiring May 22, 2013.
• Bob Stevenson, Nancy Keppelman, Deb Thompson and Tony Hart of Stevenson Keppelman Associates were named in the latest edition of The Best Lawyers in America for employee benefits law. Additionally, they were selected for inclusion in Michigan Super Lawyers and are top-ranked among employee benefits lawyers in Chambers USA 2009 Client’s Guide for America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. This was the fourth consecutive year of receiving all three honors for Stevenson and Keppelman.
• Land development consulting firm Atwell-Hicks hired Damon Sinars as a senior project manager in its power and energy division.
• Midwestern Consulting staff engineer Scott G. Fisher has become the most recent LEED Accredited Professional to join the firm’s Green Initiative. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program administered by the U.S. Green Building Council.
• The Finance Management Association awarded Ramesh Garg, A professor of finance and international business in the department of accounting and finance at Eastern Michigan University, with the FMA International Superior Faculty Adviser award. The FMA student chapter at Eastern Michigan nominated Garg for dedication, hard work and meaningful contributions to the chapter. Faculty advisers help students plan programs, guide chapter activities and ensure succession planning.
• Chambers USA 2009 selected Miller Canfield as a top law firm in all six practice areas ranked in Michigan and has ranked the firm nationally. In addition, 22 of the firm’s lawyers are recognized as leading business lawyers, more than any other Michigan law firm for the fifth year in a row. Those named leading lawyers in their specialty area in Chambers USA 2009 who are located in the Ann Arbor office of Miller Canfield are: Gregory L. Curtner, commercial litigation and national recognition in sports law; Joseph M. Fazio, real estate; and Stephen G. Palms, real estate.
• Adair Printing in Dexter announced that Mark Rothfuss joined the sales team. In his new position as a sales representative, he will focus on supporting offset printing and digital services in Michigan, Ohio and the South Eastern portion of the United States.
• The Livingston County Association of Realtors, which represents over 600 Realtors in Livingston County, recently announced their Realtor of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Affiliate of the Year. Scott Griffith, owner amd president of ERA Griffith Realty in Brighton, was named Realtor of the Year for 2009. Patty Purington, Realtor with RE/MAX Platinum, is the recipient of the 2009 Volunteer of the Year award. Mark Marker, executive vice president and partner of Vanguard Title Insurance Agency, was named the 2009 Livingston County Association of Realtors Affiliate of the Year.
ACHIEVEMENTS • Pro Energy Consultants, a home energy audit franchise, announced its expansion into Howell and the surrounding counties of Livingston, West Oakland and North Washtenaw with the signing of a new franchisee. Mike and Laurie Limbers join Pro Energy Consultants, which provides homeowners with qualified residential energy auditing designed to reduce energy costs.Â
• Contracting Resources Inc., a Brighton-based, design-build and construction management company, was named construction manager for the Hyundai Dynamometer project. Located on the Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center campus in Superior Township, the project includes site work, foundations, concrete, steel building erection, and mechanical/electrical work for the new 1,800-square-foot mapping facility. The new facility will test performance and horsepower for automobiles. DiClemente Siegel Design Inc. is the architect. Contracting Resources also was named construction manager for the Charyl Stockwell Academy project. The contract award consists of a new 28,000-square-foot educational facility to be located in Brighton. Charyl Stockwell is an elementary and middle school. Lindhout Associates is the architect.
• Ann Arbor-based Online Tech, a data center operator, announced that it sold its shared web hosting business to IGD Solutions, a Web site design, development, and hosting company for small and mid-sized businesses. Online Tech will focus on its expanding colocation and managed server business.
• Rand Construction Engineering Inc. in Brighton was selected as the construction manager by Redford-based Pat Milliken Ford to renovate their existing dealership. The project is slated for completion this fall. Rand was also selected as the construction manager by the United Jewish Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit for the expansion and renovation of the Yeshiva Darchei Torah School in Southfield. The project includes a 22,000-square-foot expansion as well as renovation of the existing facility. The project is to be completed by the end of the year.
• All Star Driver Education in Ann Arbor announced that it has ‘gone green’ with the purchase of its first Toyota hybrid Prius. The company expects to save nearly $50,000 a year for a fleet of more than 40 driver education vehicles. All Star operates in seven states, maintaining its corporate office in Ann Arbor.
• Sun Engineering, a Saline-based consulting engineering company, launched its new company web site, designed and developed by DesignHub Inc., a creative services and marketing firm also headquartered in Saline.
• The Memory Support Center at Brecon Village, a new service location in Saline for regional Evangelical Homes of Michigan, was named the recipient of a grant from the Saline Area Resource Council, an affiliate of the Washtenaw United Way. The $9,000 grant will be used to purchase another Dakim Brain Fitness unit and a three-year subscription to the software package. • The Ann Arbor Area Convention and Visitors Bureau recognized members of the Washtenaw County Hospitality Industry at the 21st Annual Recognition Dinner and Ambassador Awards. This year’s Ambassador Award recipients were the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra lead by Maestro Arie Lipsky and the National Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee.
• Clean Energy Coalition, an Ypsilanti-based nonprofit organization promoting clean energy technologies, launched the Energy Outlet, a new retail and educational space aimed at meeting the demands of the growing green and energy efficiency movements. At the Energy Outlet, consumers, contractors, and business owners can now access both information and products in order to decrease their energy use, improve their efficiency, and increase their use of clean energy. Profits gained from the sale of products and class registrations will be used to support the work of the Clean Energy Coalition and its work around the state of Michigan. CEC is involved in the management of clean energy projects including Ann Arbor Solar America Cities, ReBuild Ypsilanti, Michigan Energy Sense, Ann Arbor Clean Cities, CleanDIRRT and Biofuel Infrastructure Grants.
• The board of directors of the group formerly known as the Home Builders Association of Washtenaw County announced an official name change to the Builders and Remodelers Association of Greater Ann Arbor. Board members felt the new name will highlight the scope of member businesses and the geographic identity more clearly.
