Business Review's Rise & Fall: Coach's Catastrophe Cleaning and Independent apparel retailers
One presents business opportunity to a long-time local cleaning company; the other faces more inventory uncertainty through 2011. Here are our picks for the week’s winner and loser in the news.
Rise: Coach’s Catastrophe Cleaning. The 30-year Ypsilanti-based business was acquired by the growing Belfor USA Group Inc. Coach’s specialized in water mitigation and environmental cleaning, and the Birmingham-based Belfor specializes in fire damage, so the deal adds depth to the company’s lineup. Coach’s 5 locations will remain intact, and founder Tom Fagin will remain president of the group, according to news reports.
Fall: Independent apparel retailers. Small clothing stores and retailers are watching cotton prices, which rose 80 percent since July and are at record highs. Production is unlikely to catch up to global demand for more than a year, prompting forecasts of rising costs well into 2011. For the small retailer who cannot depend on volume leveraging, the impact is likely to be felt most harshly.
