Here are the Ann Arbor Business Review picks for last week's winner and loser in the news:
Rise: Detroit
The saga of Kwame Kilpatrick and his ruinous reign over Detroit appears to be coming to an end, letting Michigan’s largest city turn its attention to other crises. We support the Wayne County prosecutor pursuing justice - and we support the ruling that sends Kilpatrick to prison. But we also welcome the fact that the city now can mobilize efforts on issues like fixing its schools, stemming crime, forging economic development and even having a voice at the table as the state determines a new bridge to Windsor.
Fall: Mercury
The Ford Motor Co. brand, established in 1939 by Edsel Ford, may be eliminated, according to national media reports. Sources said the brand’s sales have dwindled and it’s hard to justify investing marketing dollars on a brand that won’t boost the automaker’s bottom line. It’s just another sign that the auto industry’s transition isn’t over, as manufacturers streamline their offerings. And it’s a familiar story to drivers who’ve watched recent deaths of other brands, like Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Saturn.
