Business Review's Rise & Fall: Michigan businesses and Washtenaw County home sales
One got a boost from a University of Michigan study; the other is starting to struggle again. Here are our picks for the winners and losers from the news last week:
Rise: Michigan businesses
A University of Michigan study confirmed what many business owners had said for years: The state can benefit from efforts to cultivate what’s here instead of focusing economic development efforts on attraction from outside of the state. The recommendation coming with the study urged the state to work with local economic developers - something that’s only met moderate success across the state.
Fall: Washtenaw County home sales
After a strong start, 2010 home sales in Wastenaw County are tapering off. October sales data showed a drop in both home and condo sales over 2009, when the first-time buyer credit was in full force. And after 10 months, the market is clawing to hold onto its $29 million edge over 2009 sales totals. We all hoped for better this year as a sign that home prices were stabilizing. Fingers crossed for the rest of the year.
