Business Review's Rise & Fall: The Ravens Club and Pamida

By AnnArbor.com Staff

One brings plenty of promise to Ann Arbor's Main Street; the other just closed on Chelsea's Main Street. Here are our picks for last week's winner and loser in local business news:

Rise: The Ravens Club

Sometime in 2011, we’ll stop calling the bar at 209 S. Main St. “The ex-Full Moon.” Chris Pawlicki, owner of Old Town, and his partners are turning the space into their own concept, focusing on an old-fashioned atmosphere (helped by the 100-year-old bar) and emphasis on an American food menu based on locally grown products. The combination, buoyed by Pawlicki’s experience in creating a solid downtown destination, bodes well for the future of the space and the city’s restaurant scene.

Fall: Pamida

Chelsea lost its discount department store at the end of December when the Nebraska-based chain closed the longtime store in Chelsea Shopping Center. Many employees were offered the chance to transfer, but the town and other stores in the center will feel the loss. The mall owner’s also filed suit against the store in December, leaving questions about whether the chain will stay liable for rent for several more years.

I had visited the Pamida in Chelsea several times and found the employees to be very rude when asked for help. I also found over the years the prices were very high for the cheap quality of their goods. Everyone I talked to in Chelsea including myself could truly careless about Pamida living - we just hope a better quality store with nicer employees will move in.
