Business Review's Top 5 reasons that WCC should open a downtown campus

By Paula Gardner

Washtenaw Community College is exploring options for a downtown satellite campus, with results coming in about six months. It’s a good step for the school and the city.

Here are our Top 5 reasons why:

1. Accessibility: There’s already a core employment base downtown and a transportation hub. Both make the location natural from a student convenience standpoint.

2. Space availability: Vacancy is over 10 percent, meaning the price and selection should be attractive from WCC’s operations standpoint.

3. Downtown mix: Restaurants and the University of Michigan add a lot to the city, but WCC classrooms downtown will add vibrancy to the mix of who spends time there.

4. Attraction: Enrollment is climbing every semester and a new campus in a heavily populated - and popular - area could help it grow further.

5. Core service: Reaching a broad student base is central to the WCC mission. WCC’s expansions have touched most corners of the county but downtown.

How does this get paid for?

If WCC is serious, they ought to tie up three prospective sites: 1.The air space over the proposed library lot parking structure. 2.The old Road Commission space across from the YMCA on Washington. 3.The Ann Arbor News building
