Joseph A. Bank Clothiers, a national men's retail chain, is set to open its 14th Michigan location in the long-closed Bombay furniture store in Arborland Center later this month.

The clothing store signed a lease to occupy the 4,455-square-foot building in May, filling the space between Potbelly Sandwich Shop and OfficeMax at 3783 Washtenaw Avenue on Ann Arbor's east side. The space has been empty since Bombay closed years ago.

Jerry DeBoer, senior vice president of marketing for JoS. A. Bank, said renovations at the site are underway and the store is set to open July 22. Construction includes interior demolition and rebuilding to fit the JoS. A. Bank prototype, he said.

The Maryland-based clothing store was established in 1905 and has 523 locations nationwide. This is its first Ann Arbor store, with the nearest location in Brighton.

“We are very excited to come to the Ann Arbor market," DeBoer said.

He said the company plans to hire five to seven employees to work at the new store.

Arborland listing agent Michael Lippitt of Landmark Commercial said JoS. A. Bank would be a good fit for the shopping center because the men’s retailer meshes well with the variety of stores in the mall..

The JoS. A. Bank opening comes as the Arborland Center, owned by Amcap Inc., has faced several vacancies, including the former Circuit City building that has been empty since the electronics retailer filed for bankruptcy in 2009.

The recent Borders bankruptcy also left the bookstore chain's former 22,941-square-foot location in the shopping center vacant.

Very nice location. Do you think www.alphagraphics.com can set up shop in Ann Arbor in the future? XD

I have a question and maybe you can help with the answer: Having moved here from another part of the country, I was struck by the amount of advertising window cos., furniture cos. and at least two clothing chains here buy on local network TV. Everyone of them makes it seem as though they're paying you to buy their products, you know, 75% off, and we pay the tax, no money down, no interest for 150 years, plus we'll give you a new 150-inch TV, buy one, just one and get 3 free, that's right, count-'em, three free and it's all way better quality than you can get anywhere else. How in the world can they do that, buy all that expensive TV ad time, pay their rent or mortgage, heat, air, lights, manager, employees a living wage, matching SS, workman's comp., all that, and still give you highest quality products and still, still make enough money to open a new location? I did bad in HS math, but this doesn't add up.

I don't know how they make a profit. I'm sure some of it must be tax write-offs, but they've been doing these type of deals for years. I do know you have to pay a hefty amount if you haven't paid off your purchase after the interest free 150 years.

I don't watch TV, but have heard their advertisements on radio; the name is so familiar, I'm surprised we actually didn't have one location here before. I don't know how The Men's Wearhouse at Oak Valley compares with them.

I give you five pounds of coffee if I can't beat your best deal. The competition knows me - you should to.

Good comment, but it's the deep-throated founder of Men's Wearhouse who says that.
