Chase Bank to close branch in Kroger on South Maple Street

By Ben Freed

The Chase Bank branch in the Kroger grocery store at 400 S. Maple St. in Ann Arbor will close after business ends on Saturday, July 27.

The branch will consolidate with the existing location at 2475 W. Stadium Blvd in the Westgate shopping center. The two branches are less than a block away from each other.

“We are very, very aware of our customers and ensuring that we have the most convenient channels for them to complete their banking,” Chase spokeswoman Christine Holevas said.

“And when we see a lot of activity at one branch and not as much at another, we have to take a look at that and make sure we’re serving our customers' best needs.”

Chase, headquartered in New York City, operates 14 bank branches in Washtenaw County. In addition to the branches that are consolidating, the bank has two branches in close proximity near the corner of Jackson and Zeeb roads in Scio Township. One branch at that location is in the Meijer store while the other is a stand-alone branch.

“Some of the issue is that when we acquired WaMu [Washington Mutual], there was a lot of redundancy, so we’re trying to cut down on that,” Holevas said.

PNC Bank also consolidated branches recently, closing its Arlington Square branch at the corner of Huron Parkway and Washtenaw Avenue in late April. PNC spokeswoman Amy Vargo attributed some bank consolidation to an increase in online and mobile banking.

“There are certainly new channels opening up all the time, but one is not replacing the other,” Holevas said.

“People want to do different things through those different channels. You can deposit your check through your smartphone but if you’re talking about getting a loan or a credit card or how much should I put in savings, when you want to have that consultative experience nothing beats the branch.”

Chase notified customers of the affected branches of the closing with a mailed notice Friday. It is unclear at this point whether an ATM will remain inside the Kroger store.

Chase bank is on the origination end of another mortgage document debacle. The big bank reportedly sent a customer's mortgage documents to a complete stranger, opening up the potential for identity theft. If you need help paying your mortgage payment this month, get a financial assistance.

Maybe more people are choosing to bank locally and they have fewer customers. I use a local bank and it is really great with very nice on-line banking. Chase has good on-line banking, too, but I prefer my local bank.

In San Antonio (TX) they have several small satellite police stations which all have ATMs inside. Could there be a safer place?

I've read of people getting robbed as they withdrew some of their money at outdoor ATMs, but never at indoor ATMs, where there are lots of witnesses.

With that branch right there in the Kroger, there was always the chance some fool would rob it while I was shopping in the pharmaceutical section, and I could have captured the whole thing on my cellphone camera and sold it for big bucks. Nobody's out to help the little man anymore.

Got rid of Chase and all it's fees and hoops a long time ago. Good riddance. Their CEO Jamie Dimon belongs in jail, along with a lot of other banksters.

We left chase as well. Hated their customer services and fees were horrible. Seems like I am reading about Chase being in hot water all the time now. Guess they are just as crooked as a few politicians I am reading about.

I think it's S. Maple Road. I live in this area and never could understand why there was a Chase inside Kroger when there's a big Chase just across the parking lot. Incidentally I hate Chase and their predatory practices.

What practices are those?

There is no S. Maple St. in Ann Arbor.

I just called Google Maps and the Post Office to update them with your helpful information. Apologies to the folks on South Maple, but we need you to move along as your street no longer exists.

Makes sense to me. Compared to the competition, Chase is great.

It never made any sense. They have a brick and mortar branch right outside in the parking lot. Why they also needed a branch inside the store--and a separate one to boot--didn't make much sense. Redundancy adds to the cost of banking which is already expensive enough for customers as it is. Not that I'm expecting Chase to suddenly lower its fee charges but it removes one more excuse to raise them. I don't bank at Chase and am miffed when they want to charge $6 to cash a check DRAWN ON CHASE BANK! There's no added cost to them. They would have to process the check. In fact, there's less risk because they can confirm immediately if the check has sufficient funds. They don't have to go through the Federal Reserve and process it with other checks if they don't want to. Yet, they want a fee? Now that's something to gripe about. A check is an order from a customer to his/her bank to pay another a set amount. The bank already receives its costs from its own customer. It's wholly wrong to charge another such a fee. In the end, I used my own bank and it probably cost Chase more.

I had the same problem at the TFC bank. I check was sent to me by a someone who had a account at that TCF branch and I was still charged $7.00 by the bank because I didn't have a TCF account.

"We are very, very aware of our customers and ensuring that we have the most convenient channels for them to complete their banking," Translation: we aren't making enough money at that branch. We not just be honest and stop obfuscating the truth.

She mentions redundancy. That to me is her indicating that it is about money. It does not make sense to have two locations so close together. Ranting and raving about money and dishonesty is really getting tiresome. And yes, Hawk, everything comes down to money. This is true for the poor as well as the rich.
