Ypsilanti's Cheeky Monkey to close by end of January

By Sarah Rigg

Ypsilanti's Cheeky Monkey will close early in the new year, according to co-owner Shelton Clifton.

"It's all due to the economy," Clifton said.

The gift store, which offers glassware, gifts and specialty high-end custom stuffed bears, was located in Ypsilanti's Depot Town for many years. The owners moved to a Packard Street location about a year ago.

Clifton said the holiday season has been bad for the past 4 years in a row, and this year has been no different.

"It's just like last year - hardly anybody comes in here," Clifton said.

When asked if he and his partner would maintain their online presence, Clifton said they would not. "It's no use, because online, people want a steep discount," he said.

Clifton said Cheeky Monkey would be gone by the end of January.

"It's time to go," he said.
