Coming soon: Hungry Howie's on Washtenaw Avenue in Ann Arbor

By Lizzy Alfs

There is a new tenant for the Chalmers Place shopping center on Ann Arbor’s Washtenaw Avenue: a Hungry Howie’s pizza store.

A franchisee signed a lease for a 1,500-square-foot space at 3365 Washtenaw Ave., said Chalmers Place listing broker Matthew Berke of Keystone Commercial Real Estate.

The Hungry Howie’s sign was installed recently and a poster in the window says “coming soon” and “now hiring.”

“I believe they’re into construction already,” Berke said.

The news comes two months after a franchisee for Virginia-based Elevation Burger announced plans to open in the shopping center this summer. That restaurant uses 100 percent organic, grass-fed, free-range beef that is ground at the restaurants.

Berke said he is still marketing a 5,700-square-foot vacancy in Chalmers Place that could be divided into smaller spaces.

The first Hungry Howie's opened in 1973 in Taylor, Mich., and it’s headquartered in Madison Heights. There are more than 545 locations in 21 states, including several in Washtenaw County. In July 2012, the Hungry Howie’s at 2145 W. Stadium in Ann Arbor closed.

Pizza variety is great. What I liked best about the Hungry Howie's on Stadium was their Cajun crust and cheap prices. Maybe that's why they went out of business, though. Their $5 pizza tastes much better than Little Caesar's.

Hmm

On a separate but related note, the Hungry Howie's founder passed away this week. You can read about Jim Hearn here: http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20130320/NEWS/130329984/hungry-howies-founder-jim-hearn-dies-at-72

Yayyyy! Another pizza place on Washtenaw!! Let's see, how many does that make...Cottage Inn...Domino's...Happy's...Papa Johns....now Hungry Howie's...and probably a few more I'm missing. All within a 2 mile stretch on Washtenaw between Ann Arbor and Ypsi. You pretty much can't go 20 feet without bumping into a pizza place...

You'll have to go further west to reach Jet's Pizza, off Oak Valley close to Waters Road. No competitors there in Village Centre.

Just what we need for an already obese population. Incredible!

I have half a dozen pizza choices within walking distance, but I have to admit I've always been a fan of Hungry Howies since I was a kid. Maybe it isn't as good as I remember it to be? The only way to know for sure is to try it out again...

Perfect, I like that pizza and miss the one on Stadium. My wife hates it when I get my hair cut from hot chicks at lady janes and now I'll have a good excuse to go there because I can get a pizza right after. The girls at lady janes are not going to be medical doctors or anything but they look good and will make your hair look good too.

So give them a $20 for a $4 buck tip and your good.

Lady janes will cut your hair, shampoo your hair, and give you a neck shave for $16! Also there are leather chairs with high def TV's and mags to look at and flat screen tv's in all the hair cut chairs. They have pictures of all all the girls so you can choose your favorite to cut your hair or just be first come first served. They also have sports stuff everywhere and rock music. It's good stuff, better priced and better experience then an old barber shop. Those girls will take good care of you.

Aveda is a really good deal, but you definitely have to have some extra time since everything the students do has to be checked by managers.

I use the students at Aveda in downtown Ann Arbor. Since there is no tipping it is $16 out the door and I get a good cut. How much is Lady Jane's after tip and how is the hair cut?

Elevation Burger is fantastic, their Austin, TX store is always packed. Can't wait!
