Construction on new Lake Trust Credit Union branch on Ann Arbor's west side to begin this week

By Lizzy Alfs

Construction at the new Lake Trust Credit Union branch on West Stadium in Ann Arbor is set to begin Wednesday with the demolition of the former Fidelity Bank building.

The Lake Trust Credit Union in August submitted plans to relocate the credit union from one of its current buildings at 2350 W. Stadium to the new location at 2180 W. Stadium.

After receiving approval, the Lake Trust Credit Union purchased the property at 2180 W. Stadium, formerly owned by Calvert & Lasalle LLC of Farmington Hills.

“We’re hoping to be more convenient for our members and hopefully attract new members also,” said spokeswoman Danielle Brehmer.

Brehmer said demolition to the former Fidelity Bank building should be completed by July 10, with excavation and construction on the new 3,686-square-foot credit union starting that month. She anticipates an opening of the new branch by early 2012.

“This will be a full-service branch with three drive-through lanes and one drive-up ATM,” Brehmer said.

The general contractor for the project is the Cincinnati-based DEI design-build company.

The Lansing-based credit union formed in 2010 out of a merger that included the former Detroit Edison Credit Union and NuUnion Credit Union.

There are currently two Lake Trust Credit Union locations in Ann Arbor: 2222 Packard St. and 2350 W. Stadium Blvd. The credit union owns both locations, according to city records.

Once construction on the new credit union branch is completed, Brehmer said the 2350 W. Stadium property will be available for purchase.

Brehmer said the 12 employees from the 2350 W. Stadium location will be moved to the new facility and additional employees may be hired based upon member volume.

She said she likes the “convenience factor” of the new location, which is on the busy intersection of West Stadium and West Liberty.

“These are major roadways,” she said. “Our other Stadium location is not necessarily the best location for a financial institution.”

Thank you for your message. We are proud of our partnership with DEI and their goal of working with local contractors to complete jobs in communities like Ann Arbor. This project in particular will be completed using over 90% Michigan contractors. DEI - one of the leading builders and designers of credit unions nationally - will act as a construction manager, while local contractors will complete bulk of the work on this project. We're committed to supporting each of the communities we serve from lake-to-lake in Michigan, and happy DEI is a partner that helps us make that commitment a reality. Thanks, Blake Woods Marketing, Lake Trust Credit Union

Why did they hire an out of state contractor? I for one would like to keep that money around here.
