Pittsfield Township's Planning Commission will consider day care center and apartment project this week

Pittsfield Township’s Planning Commission will consider a request Thursday night that would allow a day care center to open in a shopping center on Packard Road.

Majeda Issa of Starlight Daycare LLC is requesting a conditional use permit to open a day care center at 4080 Packard Road. in the Beehive Plaza. Marco’s Pizza occupies the western portion of the building.

According to township documents, Issa is licensed to operate a center with 40 to 60 children from infants to school age, with five to seven employees.

Issa plans interior renovations in the 3,000-square-foot space on the eastern portion of the building, which is located in the township’s C-2 zoning district. A day care center is permitted in the zoning as a conditional use.

Plans call to install a 30-foot by 40-foot outdoor play area in the southeast corner of the parking lot, but Pittsfield Township planning staff has suggested the area be relocated to the backside of the building.

“In order to provide a safer play area, the applicant should relocate the play area adjacent to the sidewalk along the backside of the building, this would allow children to access the play area without having to enter into the parking lot,” a staff report says.

The building at 4080 Packard is listed with Swisher Commercial’s Ron Dankert for $9 per square foot.

Also on the Pittsfield Township Planning Commission agenda this week, is a wetland permit request that would allow developers to move forward with an apartment complex development behind the Target shopping center on Ann Arbor-Saline Road.

The Oak Valley Apartments, proposed by the owners of the shopping center, calls to construct a 16-building apartment complex on a vacant piece of land behind the northern portion of the center.

Owners Oak Valley Centre LLC also have indicated they have long-term redevelopment plans for the shopping center that would connect it with the apartments in a pedestrian-friendly environment.

Because there are three on-site wetlands on the property, the development requires a permit and wetland impact study.

Both requests will go before Pittsfield Township Planning Commission at its Jan. 10 meeting.

Hmmm, if apartments are going in on OakValley - better lower the speed limit, as it's already really difficult to pull onto the road from businesses. Still, I'm sort of sad to see the land there get built-up. The small 2-lane roads there already get tons of hard use. As long as the "M" barn isn't going away anytime soon!
