Discount Tire returns to Scio Township for OK to build store on Jackson Road

By Paula Gardner

Discount Tire is reviving plans to build a new store on Jackson Road in Scio Township, six years after originally launching the process.

The chain, which operates 765 stores in 22 states, is seeking approval from the township to construct its fifth store in Washtenaw County.

The proposal originally went in front of the township’s Planning Commission in 2004, then again in 2006, said planning consultant Doug Lewan.

“They never kept going forward with the plans,” Lewan said.

But township officials recently have meet with Discount Tire representatives, Lewan said.

“They indicated they’re more motivated this time than in the past,” he said.

The store location would be at 5210 Jackson Road, a 1.62-acre parcel east of Zeeb and southeast of the I-94 interchange.

Neighboring businesses at that corner are Comerica, Panera and Midwest Financial Credit Union, which would be next-door to Discount Tire if it proceeds.

Discount Tire officials said the chain typically averages 30-40 new stores per year, though that pace slowed during the economic downtown.

The proposal for a conditional use permit for Discount Tire to operate a motore vehicle repair facility in the commercial district will be on the Planning Commission agenda for June 14.

Full site plan approval would follow, Lewan said.

The chain, founded in Metro Detroit but now based in Scottsdale, Ariz., wants to build a 6,942-square-foot store with a small upper level to store tires.

Meanwhile, a second pending retail proposal in Scio Township may head to the Board of Trustees at their June 22 meeting.

Developers plan to build a store on Jackson near Baker for Tractor Supply Co. were approved by the Planning Commission, Lewan said.

"..is seeking approval from the township to construct its fifth store in Washtenaw County." what? customers can't drive to the store at stadium near liberty to that discount tire? only a few miles away. AND there's a belle tire on jackson too, between zeeb and wagner on the south side of jackson.

oldblueypsi, Sure enough, it was founded in Ann Arbor. The conversation I had with the company rep didn't take us that "close to home" and the Ann Arbor News files that I have access to don't mention the history. But thanks for taking readers back to the founding year and location. What did come up in my conversation with DT - and my own recollection - was how DT chairman and CEO Bruce Halle is the namesake of the EMU library. That got rather tangental for this story but here's a link with a little detail: http://www.emich.edu/walkingtour/halle.htm

"The chain, founded in Metro Detroit"???? Come on! This is annarbor.com. Check your own files and those of the deceased Ann Arbor News. Discount Tire was founded in Ann Arbor. The first store was on the north side of Stadium Boulevard, several doors west of Liberty (just across Stadium Blvd. from what was once a softball field, then became a dump site for the bricks from the old City Hall. and then became Henderson Ford's used car lot). Accuracy in reporting is not an option, it is mandatory! Thanks.

Thank you Scio for letting Tracter Supply or any other company that wants to come in. More tax base is needed for fire dept. police dept. and things that our township do not have. Also maybe my taxes will not go up again next year. We need some good restaurants other than expensive places like downtown.
