Fans of Amer’s Mediterranean Deli are hoping a Facebook campaign will help the Ann Arbor restaurant remain in the Michigan Union after its lease expires in April, the Michigan Daily reports.

Amer’s, which also has locations on Church Street and State Street, is one of several restaurants that could be leaving the Union in coming months.

The leases for Pizza Hut, Subway, Wendy’s, Mrs. Fields, Freshens smoothies and Auntie Anne’s pretzels are also expiring, according to previous reports. University Unions is considering proposals to determine what businesses will open in the campus building.

Someone launched a “Save Amer’s in the Michigan Union” Facebook page in December, the Michigan Daily report says. It has 675 likes and asks fans to contact Vice President of Student Affairs Royster Harper and tell her Amer’s should stay in the Union.

Susan Pile, the director of the Michigan Union and Campus Involvement, said a number of options are being considered for the Amer’s space, including a University-run cafe.

I've always loved Amer's. Especially the Michigan Union location. It is the only place I would eat inside the Union. Please let's not have another local entrepreneur and Ann Arbor based restaurant lose to a big corporation. There are more than enough inside the Union and League already (Panda Express, Wendy's, Pizza Hut, Subway, Taco Bell, should I go on...)

I suspect that part of the controversy is that the University might not like an outside business making a profit on their turf, when they themselves could potentially be making that profit.

Amer's has done a good job there, but the U-run Beanster's at the League is good too. Just please not a Tim Horton's or another place with fake cappuccino. Whoever it is, I hope they keep the cinnamon rolls and croissants from The Croissant Shop...they are to die for!

Beansters is really popular among students, as is Amer's. Both were big time studying spots for me!

GoNavy: What's fake about Tim Horton's? Their cappuccino is made from powder... they don't seem to do any real espresso drinks like they claim. I enjoy their regular coffee, however.

What is fake about Tim Horton's? Does part of your education involve learning how successful companies got that way by lying to you and selling you crap?

It's not like you're losing Amer's.....there's another one about 4-5 blocks down the street...in fact it's the main one... I don't really see this as a major problem...plus, what new things might go in there?

@Billy: Not sure what new things might go in. Also, it's a possibility that some of the current restaurants might stay. If they were interested, they just had to submit a proposal and then University Unions will decide. From the Michigan Daily: "Pile said she and the student advisory board have identified four dining concepts — chicken and burgers, a deli/sandwich shop, an international vendor and a "pizza plus," which includes pizza, pasta and breadsticks — that are of particular interest to students and will take priority in the decision process."
