The Ann Arbor City Council voted 9-0 Monday night to approve a site plan for a new Fiat showroom on West Stadium Boulevard.

The proposal calls for demolishing a 2,505-square-foot auto service building at 2095 W. Stadium Blvd., located on the Chrysler Jeep of Ann Arbor property.

Troy-based Suburban Collection acquired the dealership in June and renamed it Suburban Chrysler Jeep of Ann Arbor.

Suburban Collection proposes constructing a one-story, 3,408-square-foot Fiat showroom building in place of the auto service building.

The proposed showroom building will be located on the south side of the site, almost in the same location as the existing building.

A total of 46 parking spaces are proposed, most for new vehicle inventory storage.

The site currently has two driveways on West Stadium Boulevard. The southern driveway and curb cut will be closed as part of the project.

According to plans, an underground stormwater management system also will be installed when the existing parking lot is restored. The site has no stormwater management.

City Planner Alexis DiLeo provided a history of the site in a staff report, noting the property originally was developed as Ed’s Standard Service Station in 1959-60.

The council also voted 9-0 Monday night to finish rezoning property at 1300 N. Maple Road, the last step required to allow construction of a new Speedway gas station there.

Council Members Tony Derezinski and Marcia Higgins were absent.

It's another reminder that FIAT bought Chrysler.

It's actually FIAT, not Fiat. And FIAT prefers to call it a salon, not a showroom.

It is tough to see the Fiat brand's plan for long-term success in the U.S. market. One 'niche' model and an absurd ad campaign have not set sales afire. Still, that the Suburban group is willing to invest in the facility is a good thing, and if there is any market for an absurd microcar, this is it. It certainly speaks to the long-term commitment to keeping this dealership inside the city limits, and to enhancing the business climate on West Stadium.

This is the former Larry's Standard service station.

i think it would be a good idea to publish attendance once every six months.

It seems to be a 4th ward issue.

This looks like a minimalist front side in the drawing, at least. I hope it presents well. We are going upscale here on West Stadium, aren't we?

If the site was originally a service station, I wonder if there are fuel tanks or contaminated soil to be dealt with.

sounds like some great investing on the west side .

Marcia Higgins gone again? Guess she's out resolving the neighborhood flooding issues? It would be nice if AnnArbor.com did a scorecard of Council member attendance so we would all know specific data when our elected officials are too busy to show up for meetings. Perhaps Ms. Higgins should resign--obviously she's not representing the 4th Ward like she should.

She's clearly following the Margi Teall model of constituent service in the 4th Ward!

If there is no service area how will they fix the cars?

A Fiat that needs service? Perish the thought!

No, Marcia Higgins absent? Impossible! 4th Ward continues to suffer with these women and their failure to show up, represent, respond to constituent calls or emails, etc. How much will the City Council accept?

I was referring to the invisible women of the 4th ward, Lola. Margie Teall and Marcia Higgins Both fail to represent their constituents. It has nothing to do with gender, as a simplistic comment would imply. Do you know how often they are absent fom City Council meetings or leave early? Do you know they don't respond to emails or phone calls? Best to have the facts before attacking other posters.

Lola Do you have a clue as to how often Marcia Higgins is absent from meetings?

Nice sexist attitude there, Sparty. Since when is Tony Derezinski a woman (these women)? Would it have made any difference if "these women" had been present to vote? The vote was unanimous. Do you know WHY they were absent? Perhaps they had more pressing concerns in their lives than voting on these non-controversial issues.
