Kentucky Fried Chicken on West Stadium closes

By Katrease Stafford

The Kentucky Fried Chicken located at 2245 W. Stadium closed June 29.

Katrease Stafford |

The Kentucky Fried Chicken located at 2245 W. Stadium officially closed its doors Friday, June 29.

A sign posted on the store window informed customers of the restaurant's closure.

The notice did not give any reasoning behind the decision, but advised customers to go to the nearest location at 4040 Washtenaw Avenue.

However, the manager at the Washtenaw location declined to comment on the reason for the closing.

The seafood restaurant Long John Silver's inhabited half of the building at one point and is now also closed. With the closure of that location, there are no Long John Silver's in the Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti area. The closest location is in Westland.

The building formerly occupied by KFC and Long John Silver is 2,500 square feet at the intersection of West Stadium and West Liberty. The building was last listed as being owned by Leo Fox, who purchased the space in 1998. Multiple attempts to reach Fox were unsuccessful.

This sign was posted on the building to inform customers of the closure.

Katrease Stafford |

The 2012 assessed value of the building is valued at $376,400. The property was listed for lease this spring for $30 per square foot, but no information was available this week on whether a new tenant is moving in.

The KFC Corporation is based in Louisville,Kentucky and was founded in 1952. KFC has more than 15,000 outlets in 105 countries and territories around the world.

KFC is part of the Yum! Brands, Inc., which is also based in Louisville. Yum! has more than 37,000 restaurants across the globe and owns KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. In 2011, the company generated $1.3 billion in net earnings.

Long John Silver's opened its first restaurant in 1969 in Lexington, Kentucky.

The restaurant was once a division of Yum! Brands but the corporation announced Sept. 22, 2011 that it signed definitive agreements to sell not only Long John Silver’s, Inc. but also A&W Restaurants, Inc. to two separate buyers. Long John Silver’s was acquired by LJS Partners LLC, an assortment of franchisee leaders and investors.

Horrible food. Horrible employees. Never would eat there!

Frustrated in A2

Mon, Jul 9, 2012 : 2:03 a.m.

Now I have to go out to Popeye's on Baker Rd for chicken.

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 4:14 a.m.

You mean KFC? They got rid of the full name a long time ago. KFC is right up there with the big yellow M, the BK Lounge, TB, Arby's. Unhealthy food as far as the eye can see. I'd like to see a really healthy sandwich shop or diner. A place that doesn't serve mayo or anything fried. Healthy fast food. And I mean lean, low in salt, unprocessed food. No coke. Well nobody would go to that kind of place I'm guessing. I'm sure it's been tried before.

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 3:54 a.m.

Thought Jack in the box was making a comeback. Whatever happened to that?

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 8:25 p.m.

Jack in the Box used to have a small presence in Michigan. They seemed to disappear not too long before their food poisoning debacle.

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 5:50 p.m.

I never knew Jack In The Box was anywhere but the west coast. It's doing very well there. It's a favorite of mine when I travel. I've never seen them east of Phoenix, though.

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 12:43 p.m.

I have seen them in other states including California. But nothing here. I remember Jack. Wow, long long time ago.

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 4:15 a.m.

Remember rotten cow? I mean, Hot N Now? That was some nasty stuff!

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 3:53 a.m.

I miss Long John Silver's. Please come back to Ypsi.

Billy Bob Schwartz

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 12:46 a.m.

KFC used to have nice-sized white meat. Now, if you ask for white meat, you get a cow breast. At least, it seems like it. The thing is about half a pound. Not exactly normal chicken. I guess it's chicken on serious steroids.

On The Huron

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 11:46 p.m.

Does anyone remember Everett's? How about bring them back to the area. A great diner (greasy spoon) during its time. Get your own coffee and pour for others on the way back with the pot and a juke box at every table. La Pinata would be a close second.

Wolf's Bane

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 10:24 p.m.

good bye and don't come back.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 10:02 p.m.

Too much competition, it happens in business. The nice thing is in Ann Arbor chances are something will take it's place pretty soon.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 9:34 p.m.

How about a Wendy's at that location?

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 12:41 p.m.

Excellent idea. And an Arby's as well. How bout A&W?

Fred Zimmerman

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 8:18 p.m.

I usually had good experiences (and was personally keeping this location in business). Admittedly, there were some challenges, but once they got to know you, they were quite pleasant.

Nicole Streeter

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 7:49 p.m.

Ann Arbor Needs a SONIC or pay for me to open an Organic Hemp Bakery.

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 12:41 p.m.

There was one off Washtenaw near K Mart. They closed a year or so later. Burger places don't stay long. There is a new one opening up near Hewitt. Not sure how they will fair either.

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 11:39 a.m.

Sonic would be PERFECT (and make it a 24 hour location, we need more late night options around here)

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 6:52 p.m.

The closest location is in Westland... There's a KFC/Taco Bell in Saline. Depending on where you are in A2, the Westland location might not be closest. Regardless, no loss. I don't even cared abt the one in Saline.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 6:54 p.m.

OK, I reread the article and saw they were talking of Long John Silver's being in Westland. Still. don't care.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 5:47 p.m.

I have to agree with everyone who states that this franchise closed because of horrid management and bad service. I know this from first hand experience as I placed many students here over the year in work placements, and the management tried to cheat, get out of paying them, and ripping them off. when I tried to advocate for my students, the management ignored my calls and appearances in the store. I tried to speak with a manager once in person about not paying one of my students the wages he was owed, and she pretended she did not understand English. I say "pretend" because up until that moment, she had always interacted in English with the student. Pathetic. Good riddance to this franchise location.

Mon, Jul 9, 2012 : 2:16 a.m.

BTW, I already said I did pursue the issue...but was met by the ruse of the pretend non-english speaking manager...also wrote a letter to the "owner". No response ever.

Mon, Jul 9, 2012 : 2:15 a.m.

I'm not all that interested in pursuing all the facts online in a public forum, but the crux of the issue was that the employer would fire the students prior to their receiving their first paychecks, that is, after they worked a few hours, a few shifts, and then renege on every paying them. Happened several times.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 6:34 p.m.

I just have a hard time believing that your students showed up for work at a KFC in A2 Michigan and were not paid. Why would you drop the issue? If you were really the students advocate wouldn't you at least report this to the appropriate government agency? I'd be interested in hearing all the facts.

Madeleine Borthwick

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 5:41 p.m.

Good Riddance!! KFC's quality has suffered since Harlan Sanders sold his recipe all those years ago, it's gone from yummy chicken to greasy, fat-laden, comparatively tasteless harbingers of DEATH! ...does anyone remember when there was a Boston Market there? can we pleeeeease bring it back? their meatloaf is second only to my own....thank you Betty Crocker...

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 12:34 p.m.

Same thing happened when the Wendy founder died as well. It seems things go bye bye when original owners pass away and CEOs have to change things around. Sad. I miss their taco salads.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 4:32 p.m.

La Pinata 2.0!

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 12:33 p.m.

Any way to get that restaurant back? Best Margaritas in town.

Lynn Liston

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 4:55 p.m.

We could use a good Tex-Mex restaurant on this side of town!

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 4:12 p.m.

I'd love to see a unique chain(to our area), if a chain is what we get. How about a Del Taco, L & L Hawaiian Barbeque, Jack's, or please God, an In and Out Burger!

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 4:04 p.m.

Following Boston Market, Long John Silvers and now KFC, just another food chain to leave Ann Arbor. BTW, Zingerman's Roadhouse has a basket of fried chicken that is really good and not too greasy! And they have many other great menu items as well. There's also Mary's Chicken on Packard. We need to support our local restaurant and say good riddance to the old obsolete chains! Everyone reply to my blog here with one or two great locally owned restaurants?

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 1:46 p.m.

Ali Baba's is great too

Basic Bob

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 12:47 a.m.

$14.50? They must be darn proud of that chicken. Are they hand-fed on truffles?

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 7:57 p.m.

Take out a second mortgage if you wish to eat at Zingerman's Roadhouse.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 7:06 p.m.

Banfield's on Packard has always had great food, even if it is a grubby old run down dive that hasn't seen a paint brush or carpenter's hammer since 1968.

Madeleine Borthwick

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 5:55 p.m.

sw, absolutely! the Roadhouse has buttermilk chicken that is to die for.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 5:49 p.m.

pilars charges like 10 bucks for 3 tamales. Meanwhile....tamales got for 12 for 6.99 downtown in Mexicantown.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 4:35 p.m.

Roadhouse Buttermilk-Fried Chicken 2 pieces $14.50 Not sure that I like the locals THAT much.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 4:05 p.m.

Pilar's Tamales

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 3:08 p.m.

The staff was not only as others have said, exceedingly rude, etc but the place was also usually very dirty. When you're afraid to sit on the seats for fear of sticking, consuming food there is very unappealing.

Madeleine Borthwick

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 5:54 p.m.

sticky seats. ugh.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 3:03 p.m.

This location had horrible customer service, I'm not surprised that they didn't get any business

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 2:38 p.m.

It's not this week-old news itself that is such a testament to the provincial nature of Ann Arbor, it's the sheer volume of comments about it. Me? I'm holding out for free-range arugula

Fred Zimmerman

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 8:16 p.m.

No one so provincial as a self-styled sophisticate.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 2:02 p.m.

I loved there grilled chicken, and there cole slaw, until I saw staff mixing the cole slaw bare handed. So I refused the hole order asked for my money back and left and never went back.. That was gross.............. ect............. sick......who knew where their hands were last?

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 3:13 p.m.

Hey, shadow, there's a Chipotle in Briarwood Mall.

shadow wilson

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 2:21 p.m.

You all need a chipolte on that side of town....good food good prices with an environmentally conscious company....when I was a kid Kentucky fried chicken on Jackson rd was very good ... not the greasy fatty stuff of recent times.....if any are interested the marion-kay spice co has the original kentucky fried spice mix for sale

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 1:58 p.m.

What strikes me as odd is the fact that Leo Fox is the owner of Arbor Farms. This place sells vegetarian, organic and health food...what an odd thing to own! (KFC) Did call that store to reach Mr. Fox? Good riddance!

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 12:32 p.m.

Reminds of a song called Healthy Food Junkie. Maybe he had to have his fix once a week?

Chris Jackson

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 1:55 p.m.

This location had terrible customer service. Some things I had observed in other franchises, for example, they would do silly things like not include drinks with combo meals. I mean, wasn't that the point of the combo meal -- to simplify the ordering process? That's on the franchise owner and perhaps corporate. Stuff that is staff related (and also management-related for placing silly expectations on the staff) includes a dirty dining room, no condiments or napkins available, and asking customers to back up so as to reset the drive-thru timer (makes the average time appear lower). In the case of the drive-thru timer, that's a silly expectation. If that's what you're worried about, you've got other problems which are being ignored. I'm surprised it made it this long. 7 years ago, I used to live just a couple blocks from here -- in those apartments across from the post office employee parking lot. I only ever went here because of the LJS, but the prices were also so stinking high (true of many Stadium locations, Taco "Ball" for example) that I rarely ate there. Once I moved away, I never came back.

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 5:42 p.m.

Regardless of your food preferences, I always think you can see a real difference in the way KFC's, Taco Bell's, McD's, Wendy's, etc. are managed across the country. For instance, I generally think McD's are pretty well run, pretty clean, albeit not always that friendly. KFC's are among the absolute worst, even though I love their food. I think the new Culver's on Jackson is well run. It's new but service was very fast and cheery when I was there.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 1:48 p.m.

Best fried chicken in the county can be found at Family's Fried Chicken on Michigasn Ave and Congress in Ypsilanti, right across from the police station. I stopped going to KFC a long time ago and made this the go to place for chicken.

Mon, Jul 9, 2012 : 1:53 a.m.

Peeps talkin about how good the gizzards are! and here I thought I was the only southern boy in town :-)

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 12:55 a.m.

Bob....The gizzards are a little better at Family's IMO and I like the bird a little better also ( I guess we know who the hillbillies are around here )

Basic Bob

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 12:42 a.m.

I like the gizzards at Mary's Fabulous. You can't find those at KFC, nor would you want to.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 4:23 p.m.

I can't speak for Family's but agree that Mary's is fabulous.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 3:03 p.m.

Family's Fried Chicken is not even close to Mary's Fabulous Chicken. Go straight to 3220 Packard Road if you want the best chicken around.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 1:21 p.m.

The chicken at this place was actually pretty good the last few years. The service, however, was abysmal. We stopped by a number of times only to be told that they were "out of chicken" and even when they had chicken the service was often slow or they'd get the order wrong. Happy's Pizza had decent fried chicken, but they switched to combined pieces recently which are annoying. Oh, we'll, our arteries don't really need fried chicken anyway.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 12:56 p.m.

This location has had the worst food and even worse service since it was moved from Jackson Road when they built the Walgreens. Adios! Good Riddance. Bring on the Tim Horton's. The westside needs a good bagel/donut/coffee shop with a drive thru!

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 12:30 p.m.

The restaurant that Tims is taking use to be a burger place with better burgers then those other two places. Went under a lot of different names before now. Glad to hear something is going in there.

Billy Bob Schwartz

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 12:37 a.m.

Sorry, but Tim Horton's...isn't that the place that puts mushrooms in their chili? What's with that????

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 4:20 p.m.

The West side already has Barry's Bagels and Dimo's Donuts. You need more?

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 3:53 p.m.

Thank you NotABleedingHeartLiberal......thank you......Bring on the Tim Horton's

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 3:27 p.m.

Tim Horton's is coming to the Maple Village Shopping Center and is replacing the old burned out chinese food place in front (or at the side) of English Gardens.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 1:34 p.m.

The service was already lousy back when it was still up the street on Jackson Road, and it only got worse once it moved. The occasions where my family wants KFC are rare, but even then, this location will not be missed. My question is: How did it take this long for it to close?

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 12:41 p.m.

To follow up with TMC216 & others who suggested other fast food places for that location--am I remembering correctly that it was (briefly & long ago) a Boston Market? Even though it's a fast-food chain, BM has some decent choices and serves more genuinely food-like food (lots of vegetable side dishes) than most such outfits. The other chain that serves pretty nearly real food is Noodles & Co., it seems to me. Since we're already in line for the latter in the location of the late lamented Szechuan West, how about a Boston Market in place of the KFC? Not that we can influence the outcome very much, but we might as well weigh in, I suppose. Something other than a restaurant might be nice, too--what does this part of town need? Let's see...we're oversupplied with drugstores and well provided with grocery stores; we have a local bookstore, a toy store, dry cleaners, card shops, a couple of diners, coffee shops, hardware stores, an appliance store (a bit pricey), a bike shop, shoe and clothing stores, an office supply place--the more I think about it, the more I think we lack very little in the way of stores in the W. Stadium/Maple area. Maybe the people in charge of the decision should be thinking about some other creative use of that space...

Ann English

Mon, Jul 9, 2012 : 11:22 p.m.

I would welcome an art supply store in that spot; O'Leary Paint had sold art supplies along with house paint, but there hadn't been enough demand for art supplies, so they started selling house paint only. Have to go to Ypsi now for such paint. If I hadn't accepted an invitation several months ago to go to Garden Gourmet next door to KFC for a Chinese dinner, I would not have known just where this KFC had been. The service was good at Gourmet Garden.

Mon, Jul 9, 2012 : 6:36 p.m.

I'm hoping for an El Pollo Loco. It's a pipe dream though...

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 12:28 p.m.

I thought that location was up on Washtenaw. Must not have been there very long because I know the one on Washtenaw was gone in a matter of a few years. There food is pretty gross too.

Madeleine Borthwick

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 5:50 p.m.

yes, Vivian, there was a Boston Market htere, my husband and I used to eat there almost every Sunday and we really miss it.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 12:41 p.m.

KFC's chicken is too fatty ( globs of fat under the skin) I wouldn't eat there no matter where the store was located.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 12:38 p.m.

Good product, but WORST SERVICE EVER!

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 12:33 p.m.

Too blue collar for Ann Arbor.......high priced coffee and conversation shop wanted.....

Taco Ball closet location another stellar proof read. ;-P

Hi Dading, Thanks for the comment! The typo has been corrected.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 12:20 p.m.

Taco Ball?

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 11:37 a.m.

Hope the franchisee didn't lose his/her shirt. We did stop there once a little later than dinner time eightish and were told they were out of chicken.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 12:19 p.m.

I had numerous problems with that location as well. Never did with the one in Ypsi. I guess this is why I don't solicit Stadium blvd. There are no more good eateries there anymore.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 11:32 a.m.

I can EASILY tell you why they closed.... Staff was EXTREMELY unfriendly to start with. I mean outright RUDE to customers.... They were almost ALWAYS out of something...often it was "dark meat" or "white meat" that they were out of..... This place had atrocious management....THAT is why it closed.

Billy Bob Schwartz

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 7:55 p.m.

When I was young, I was taught that the customer is always right. Over the years, it seems to have changed, first to the customer is usually right, then the customer is often right, and now, the customer is sometimes right, but not often. At least in many places this holds. Not in places that thrive, though.

Madeleine Borthwick

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 5:46 p.m.

Billy, that too!! anyone who works in the fast-food industry knows(or should know)that you CAN NOT be rude to your customers because as nasty as they can be, they are the reason you have a job. DUUUUUH!

Joe Edwards

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 2:36 p.m.

Gotta agree with Billy. This store was awful. Dirty too.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 11:17 a.m.

Why is the Westland location in the closet?

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 12:47 p.m.

I like that idea. Ball in the Closet. Interesting. Who knows.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 12:51 p.m.

Darn they fixed it. I like it better when it said "Westland was the closet location" JNS.....might make a reality tv show.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 12:17 p.m.

For a number of reasons I can't mention here Cash.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 11:07 a.m.

This site seems to be doomed. Many have opened and closed, a short time later, in this same location.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 10:39 a.m.

Let's see, chicken shack closes down or store front on Carpenter up for rent. Which to read first. Decisions, decisions..........

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 7:23 p.m.

Ya know, if a Chicken Shack opened there it might do ok as long as it was managed properly. Poor management and limited menu led to this KFC's downfall.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 10:22 a.m.

Overpriced with lousy products & service which is surprising for a YUM brands store. Let's hope Arby's might take over if it remains a fast food location?

Mon, Jul 9, 2012 : 3:27 a.m.

teach23 Thanks you are right I had that wrong. jns131 A&W in Dexter. Used to be Fowlers at the corner NE corner of Stadium and Liberty. And Stadium Tavern on the NW corner.

Sun, Jul 8, 2012 : 1:59 a.m.

How about a Rallys/Checkers?

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 8:04 p.m.

Knock Arby's all you want but it's a fact that Arby's is one of the healthiest choices for fast food. Their regular roast beef sandwich is one of the best choices for a low fat sandwich. Of course, there's the whole red meat debate, but in terms of nutritious, low-fat alternatives it's pretty high on the list.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 7:34 p.m.

Darn, landed this reply under the wrong comment on first attempt. Anyway... Ya know, if a Chicken Shack ( ) opened there it might do ok as long as it was managed properly. Poor management and limited menu led to this KFC's downfall.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 1:52 p.m.

There is an A&W in Dexter.

Marvin Face

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 1:08 p.m.

"I'm so hungry, I could eat Arby's"

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 12:33 p.m.

jns.....I think the A&W in Bellevelle id still open

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 12:16 p.m.

O I forgot one thing. Ponderosa can now be found in Jackson or Westland and Detroit.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 12:14 p.m.

Quite frankly I can't understand why anyone would want to drive to Jackson and Zeeb for an Arboy's when on Stadium it was an excellent location due to the fact there was a number of houses in that area. Also, I heard Hungry Howie just closed as well. A&W has been gone for a number of years and the only location there is Chelsea or Westland. So sad to see the classics going by the wayside. I hate McD and BK. Wendy's is about the only alternative. I still miss the Mexican place on the corner of Liberty and Stadium. Wonder what the owners of this land are planning now? So sad to see all the negative changes.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 12:05 p.m.

jcj... It was the building next door, that was a Ponderosa. It is another restaurant now.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 12:03 p.m.

People actually eat at Arby's? Why?

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 11:57 a.m.

That location was already an Arbys. It closed when a new Arbys was built out on Jackson Rd.

Sat, Jul 7, 2012 : 11:48 a.m.
