Cyber security conference planned for October in Ypsilanti

By Nathan Bomey

Cyber security is the focus of a statewide conference set to take place at the Ann Arbor Marriott Ypsilanti at Eagle Crest in October.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, a former Ann Arbor venture capitalist, is expected to serve as a keynote speaker at the conference, which has been dubbed Michigan Cyber Summit 2011. It will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 7.

Organizers, including the Washtenaw County Cyber Citizenship Coalition, are also hoping that U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and White House Cybersecurity Director Howard Schmidt will attend.

The conference will highlight information technology security problems facing businesses, government, schools, law enforcement agencies and consumers.

The event comes as the Ann Arbor area is benefiting from a surge of interest in web security businesses. California-based Barracuda Networks recently said that it plans to add up to 500 jobs at its Ann Arbor office over the next several years, and Ann Arbor-based Arbor Networks is adding jobs after it was acquired last year by Tektronix Communications.

Registration, which covers meals, is $20 and is open to the public.

Thank goodness that they are doing this conference in Ypsilanti. The criminal element really needs to go High-Tech. I get tired of reading about shootings, stab & grabs in Ypsi, now I will be able to read about High-Tech crimes in Ypsi instead.

Is this a conference or a job fair? What is the "Business" track going to cover? As a software engineer concerned with security issues involved in developing web services to be consumed by applications running on mobile devices, what will I get out of this conference?
