Michigan leading national manufacturing job growth

By Ben Freed

Michigan is leading the way in a resurgent American manufacturing sector, according to a report from CNBC.

Robert Chase | Ann Arbor News

An Information Technology & Innovation Foundation report released last year found United States manufacturing declined more in the last 10 years than it did during the Great Depression, losing a approximately 5.7 million jobs. In January 2012, fewer than 12 million Americans worked in manufacturing.

Michigan was hit with a 46.7 percent manufacturing job loss rate between 2000 and 2010, the highest in the country. But CNBC reported the state has since lead the way in American manufacturing job creation, followed by Texas, Indiana, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The United States has added 520,000 manufacturing jobs since January 2010.

According to the Washtenaw County economic forecast prepared by University of Michigan economists Donald Grimes and George Fulton, the county is expected to add approximately 712 manufacturing jobs through 2015. Most of those jobs are expected to come outside the motor vehicle manufacturing sector.

Many of manufacturing jobs are being created in the U.S. or coming back to America as a result of increasing labor, production and energy costs oversees, CNBC reported.

To all the lefties here. Jennies plan did nothing to help a horrible job climate in this state, it's time to give credit where credit is due.

Mr Fulton stated that most of the job growth is NOT coming from the auto sector, at least in the Washtenaw County Area. It is possible that the growth in auto related jobs is spurring growth in other sectors, but this is probably not the core cause of this job growth. I would have to see comments from those hiring to see if RTW has anything to do with this job growth. As most union contracts have yet to run up against RTW, I doubt that new midnight, non-agenda, law is the cause of this job growth. More likely it is due to the growth of the economy as a whole, and increased production costs overseas. After the Great Recession of 2007-2009 it is going to take YEARS to recover, and we are seeing it beginning to gain momentum. Now if only we could get the nattering naybobs of negativity to stop Whining on the airwaves for hours every day. (while they cash big checks, after telling us how bad it is out there for the rest of us)

Just love how there is never any mention of the role President Obama played in getting the car industry back on its feet in Michigan! Michigan's economy would still be in the tank if it were not for the resurgence of the auto industry because the job growth in other areas just isn't that significant. A gain of 715 jobs!

We were warned about this. We were warned that excluding domestic partner benefits would lead to a rush of companies leaving the state. Oh, wait... this is about a company COMING to the sate? Oh, never mind.

Michigan's Domestic Partner ban is likely to be ruled unconstitutional soon by the Federal Court hearing the case, as a result of the recent SCOTUS ruling re: Equal Protection. justice Kennedy was pretty clear in his majority opinion. In fact, it's quite possible Michigan's same-sex marriage ban will also be struck down due, at a minimum it's adoption provisions will be struck.

Once again, bizarre moderation standards. "Oh, wait... this is about a company COMING to the sate? Oh, never mind." Judged by the above quote, you do.

Where in the article or in the link does it say that this is a result of companies moving jobs into the state (as opposed to the expansion of an already existing automobile industry)? The exact turn of phrase, please.

So Mr. Schauer.....tell us about how Granholm the Sequel will bring jobs to Michigan.

leaguebus

Fri, Jun 28, 2013 : 5:38 a.m.

And Granholm cut the Michigan budget by more than $2B, more than any other governor in the country. All this was done without the draconian cuts to education that Snyder has presided over.

"The United States has added 520,000 manufacturing jobs since January 2010." January 2010, one year after the GM and Chrysler bailout, which members of Rick Syder's party opposed.

Auto stimulus is where these jobs came from --- Snyder has done nothing to effect this number.

you can't handle the truth

We can't have this!!! Recall Snyder immediately!!!!!

Socialism has weakened European economies. You cannot have the few working to support the masses. The scale of economies just does not work.

leaguebus

Snyder sure hates me, I am retired and paid about $1300 more to the state last year. It's funny that the person the Republicans hate the most, Obama, does more for the Michigan economy than the states governor. Austerity in Europe has pretty much wreaked their economies. The evidence, most have changed governments and are now providing economic stimuli to their economies.

Usual Suspect

Thu, Jun 27, 2013 : 5:08 p.m.

No, no, you're mistaken. I've been told Snyder hates the middle class and only does things to help his corporate buddies and other rich people, so there mus the something wrong with this story. Either that, or all his corporate buddies and other rich people have all decided they want to work manufacturing jobs now.

AMOC

So some of Gov. Snyder's efforts to attract new businesses and expand current ones are working. Manufacturing businesses create value, which leads to above-average wages, even if the UAW glory days of paying semi-skilled workers $40 an hour in pay and benefits are behind us. Inexperienced manufacturing workers are still getting $9-15/ hour, with the potential to earn more as they develop skills. What's not to like?

Oh? Didn't GM just announce their $600 plus billion investment for expansion in Mexico?

Mohawk

Thu, Jun 27, 2013 : 5:09 p.m.

Completely incorrect --- this is purely the effect of the auto bailout by OBAMA.

"Many of manufacturing jobs are being created in the U.S. or coming back to America as a result of increasing labor, production and energy costs oversees, CNBC reported." Yep, all those jobs that got shipped overseas during the Bush years......the people in those countries are now standing up and demanding higher wages resulting in the jobs coming back here. Guess what? With RTW people here will be forced to take these jobs with wages comparable to the fast food industry. Hooray for racing to the bottom!

leaguebus

And add almost $1 trillion to the economy.

Basic Bob

Manufacturing jobs pay quite a bit better than average, plus they create additional wealth that other jobs do not. Please keep telling yourself this is a path to the bottom. Tell your kids and friends they are better off working at the mall. It will drive up the value of people who want to actually work for a living and increase wages for us.

Laughable comments............. your pals in DC are posed to admit 11 million + new Democrats. THAT will push jobless rates and lower pay.

You think so? I don't RTW is a huge factor in locating or expanding manufacturing businesses.
