Naval Engineering Education Center sails into Ann Arbor
Important and interesting things happen in Ann Arbor, and it’s possible for an astute observer to overlook major developments.
A recent announcement that missed most radar screens: The University of Michigan was chosen to lead the new Naval Engineering Education Center (NEEC), a consortium that includes 15 top colleges and universities, the Society of Naval Architects, and the American Society of Naval Engineers.
The Naval Sea Systems Command awarded the consortium a $3.2 million contract to initiate the center, and optional contract extensions could add up to $49.9 million of funding over five years.
The NEEC will educate the next generation of world-class naval systems engineers for the Navy’s engineering, acquisition and science work force to design and manufacture high-performance, reliable ships. Undergraduates will complete a minor in naval engineering, in addition to their primary engineering major. Master's students will complete a concentration or certification in naval engineering. Throughout their studies students will team with faculty, Navy personnel, and industry engineers to work on hands-on naval engineering problems.
A formal kick-off event later this month in Ann Arbor will bring together academic partners, government dignitaries and industry leaders to launch the center.
The group will also discuss the role that industry will play in the center’s activities. The center will likely be a catalyst in attracting defense contractors, shipyards, design companies and suppliers to participate in research and education programs. Some companies may even decide to establish a physical presence in Ann Arbor to maximize their involvement in center activities now that the NEEC is anchored in Michigan.
