It’s official: Nordstrom Rack, the off-price retail division of the Nordstrom Inc. department chain, is opening its first Ann Arbor location.

The Seattle-based department chain confirmed it plans to open a 30,000-square-foot store in Arborland Center by spring 2013.

"We are excited to have Nordstrom Rack join our strong lineup of tenants that serve Ann Arbor and the surrounding areas," said Ira Shwartz of AmCap Properties, the owner of Arborland, in a statement. "Nordstrom Rack's presence in Arborland Center will be a wonderful complement and fits within our strategic vision of bringing great retailers to our shopping centers."

The space, most recently occupied by Circuit City, has been vacant for three years after the electronic store liquidated.

It’s situated on the west end of Arborland, between Famous Footwear and Petco. It’s located near the former Borders store — which was replaced by beauty superstore Ulta and five below, a discount retailer that targets teens and pre-teen customers.

Nordstrom, founded as a shoe store in 1901, operates 231 stores in 31 states, which includes 110 Nordstrom Rack locations. There are Nordstrom department stores in Troy, Novi and Clinton Township. There are Nordstrom Rack stores in Troy and Grand Rapids.

The Rack stores carry “on-trend merchandise from Nordstrom stores and Nordstrom.com at 50 to 60 percent off original Nordstrom prices,” according to the company’s website.

Nordstrom Rack has the BEST shoe selection! Their clothes sometimes leave something to be desired as they are mostly castoffs from the store. Because Nordstrom doesn't do a super clearance like Macy's and some of the other big department stores (their clothes rarely get marked down more than 50% in stores) they ship all the unsold goods to "The Rack". The nice part is, they often ship the clothes to different areas of the country, so you get things you wouldn't normally find in your local Nordstrom. From what I've seen, the men's sections are usually sparse and hard to find anything that fits an average sized guy but the women's section is much better, but still the prices can be higher than they should. The shoe section is always amazing though. I found some below half price Frye heels there that I wear to this day, and if you have really small or really large feet, they have a great selection compared to places like DSW, etc.

Ok I don't care what anyone says, Nordstrom Rack is an amazing place. I have found dozens of shoes, and clothes there for a price I can afford and they are good quality. Can't wait for it to open!

Nordy's coming to AA...California fav. Tones of Macy's a good pump for Arborland. Now if we get a good feel for what is going in across the street - we might need an over-head pedestrian walk to link the whole thing.

like outlets, some of the stuff is made for for the rack and a small portion is the stuff from the regular store. iti is not great shopping and given the location will probably be aimed for the younger crowd

Well....if it was anything less classy than a "Nordstrom" brand, you can bet this thread would be heavy with disappointment.

Why are they 50% off their normal store pricing? Why would anyone pay 2x for something - there must be something more here? Do they not have normal sizes? Are there no store attendants to help you? Is it last years line leftovers? Forgive my ignorance but am I the only one who is confused by the pricing ?

Except, I'm still Boycotting Arbor Land for kicking the buses out. They have created a mess on Washtenaw!

Only the store owners can pressure the mall owners into bringing the buses back in. So we need to let the stores know what they need to do to get our business back!

I'm with SW. The stores indeed are to blame - they should set up shop elsewhere.

The Arbor Land owners are the ones that made that decision. The stores there would rather have kept the bus stop, especially after Borders closed. It brought in commuter traffic. Sales have dropped since the buses were kicked out. Blame the owners of the mall, not the stores.

The Arborland owners/landlords are elitist idiots (against public transportation), but we can't blame the stores that are still there. I'm happy that Ulta and Nordstrom Rack will be there... I will be walking there and doing lots of shopping.

Happy news -- I found a couple of favorite outfits at Nordstrom Rack stores while on business travel to California. Now there will be one near us.

Let the chain store bashing begin. Unless that's OK in Arborland. Or unless this is one of the good chains that we don't mind having around here. Or for whatever reason this one is different from the ones that get bashed.
