Charles Doriean of Ann Arbor participates in a Detroit beautification project May 22.

More than 100 volunteers gathered to create the urban garden at Brenda Scott Middle School in Detroit. Community volunteers as well as American Express, United Way for Southeastern Michigan and City Year Detroit worked together to plant the garden, build benches and a gazebo and paint motivational murals to hang around the school.

Students at the school will continue to care for the garden throughout the school year and the community will benefit from the foods harvested.

The gardening event is the third in a series of "Travel with Your Mind" volunteer events by American Express. The program was designed to help revitalize a local school through a series of transformational projects and multicultural initiatives.
