People & Achievements in the greater Ann Arbor area, including Clark Construction and National Center for Manufacturing Sciences

The following is a list of achievements by businesses and individuals in the Ann Arbor area:

• Rick Hutter of Ann Arbor was named recipient of the Charles J. Clark Safety Award, which is presented annually to the Clark Construction employee who demonstrates exceptional dedication and commitment to safety in the construction industry. Hutter is a project superintendent who has been particularly active in most of Clark’s projects in the Ann Arbor area, including the City of Ann Arbor 15th District Court and Police Building and the University of Michigan’s Stephen M. Ross School of Business. Hutter was honored at Clark's annual meeting May 13. Clark Construction is headquartered in Lansing.

• The Ann Arbor-based National Center for Manufacturing Sciences recently announced that the Robotics Technology Consortium has been named to the advisory committee to the Congressional Robotics Caucus. The caucus focuses on key issues facing the nation's traditional industrial robotics industry as well as issues critical to growing companies, markets and industries based on recent technological advances that enable robots to perform functions beyond traditional assembly line tasks and to operate in environments beyond the factory floor. As part of the advisory committee, the RTC will help Congress understand the many challenges and issues likely to emerge in the robotics sector and help ensure that the U.S. can maintain global leadership as the robotics industry undergoes expansion in the coming decades.

• The Saline Area Chamber of Commerce has launched its new Web site, www.salinechamber.org, designed and developed by DesignHub Inc., a creative services and marketing firm based in Saline. A highlight of the new chamber site is an interactive member directory that can be easily searched by multiple selection criteria. A password-protected member log in area lets Chamber members themselves update their directory profiles, including logos and photos.

• MedHub’s residency management system has been expanded to incorporate integrated functionality to handle medical schools and medical students. The development of this functionality makes available to MedHub the potential for expanded market penetration for its flagship product. The functionality was piloted at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine where all third and fourth year Medical Students have been using the system. MedHub Inc. is a health care technology company based in Ann Arbor.

• The Clean Energy Coalition, headquartered in Ypsilanti, recently added two new staff members. Matt Sandstrom was hired as the clean transportation project manager and Jenny Oorbeck will serve as a building technical services project manager.

• Each year in May, the Washtenaw County Bar Association honors one person with the Liberty Bell award. This year, the award is being presented to Catherine McClary, Washtenaw County Treasurer, in recognition of her history of community service and her efforts to make government more open and accessible to the public.The award recognizes outstanding service performed by a non-lawyer citizen who has given of his or her time and energy to strengthen the effectiveness of the American system of freedom under law.

• Barb Waitz of Ann Abor's Waitz & Associates has earned the nationally recognized Short Sales and Foreclosure Resource certification. The National Association of Realtors offers the SFR certification to Realtors who want to help both buyers and sellers navigate distressed sales.

• The contract for architectural and engineering services needed to construct a new transit center for the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority (TheRide) has been awarded to DLZ Michigan, a Lansing-based firm.

• Thomas Gillespie, author and researcher in vehicle dynamics, opened the sixth International Colloquium SAE BRAZIL Slurry and Road Equipment & Engineering Showcase, held May 19 through 21. In his presentation, “Overview of Commercial Vehicle Dynamics,” Gillespie introduced the latest in suspension systems technology and new materials for road equipment. Gillespie is a professor at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute and author of the best-selling “The Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics."

• The Washtenaw Community College Foundation has named Marianna Staples as a 2010 Honoree in their annual Salute to Women’s Leadership. Staples, who devotes much of her time to organizing and coordinating The Festive Affair, was honored for her strengths in community leadership and providing an example of excellence to the students of WCC. Staples and her husband Ken established The Festive Affair to benefit the Salvation Army family center, which is now named in their honor: The Salvation Army Staples Family Center. Over the last 18 years Marianna Staples has helped raise more than $2 million to fund the center, which provides a home environment to families and individuals in the 35-bed shelter.

• Meadowlark Builders, based in Ann Arbor, has been awarded a 2010 Guildmaster Award for exceptional customer satisfaction. GuildQuality gives a handful of its members an annual award for exemplary quality and customer service. Meadowlark Builders was one of 139 homebuilders, remodelers, developers and contractors throughout North America recognized for their outstanding customer service.

• Rocketing from zero to 75 mph in 3.766 seconds, the University of Michigan's MRacing Formula SAE team set an SAE Collegiate Design Series record in acceleration at the event held at Michigan International Speedway May 12-15. Racing against 120 teams from universities and colleges across the globe, the team had its best finish in 16 years. The Michigan team took second overall in the competition.

• Bandito’s California Style Mexican Restaurant is teaming up with Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan to raise funds for Girl Scout camp. Customers dining at Bandito’s, 216 N. Fourth Ave. in downtown Ann Arbor, can have 15 percent of their purchase donated now through May 23. Diners must indicate that they would like to “Dine to Donate” to Girl Scouts.

• The Ann Arbor Transportation Authority held a ribbon-cutting ceremony May 10 to celebrate the grand opening of its Plymouth Road Park & Ride Lot.
