People & Achievements in the greater Ann Arbor area, including Packard Health and Nie Funeral Home

The following is a list of achievements by businesses and individuals in the Ann Arbor area:

• Ann Arbor-based Packard Health has announced three additions to its board. Anne Brown is a nonprofit consultant providing program implementation addressing health disparities in low income and minority populations. She most recently served as district manager for State Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith of the 54th District and performs the policy research for the Departments of Human Services and Community Health.
Lakshmi Halasyamani is the vice president for quality and systems improvement at Saint Joseph Mercy Health System - a member of Trinity Health. She also is a member of various national and regional organizations targeted at improving health care outcomes.

John Martin

John Martin was the president and CEO of Catholic Social Services from 1979 to 1997. He continues to teach in the University of Michigan School Of Social Work and serves as a consultant to human service organizations.

• Douglas R. (Dutch) Nie II of Nie Funeral Home in Ann Arbor was recently elected recording secretary of the Michigan Funeral Directors Association. MFDA is a professional organization representing roughly 1,300 funeral directors serving 650 funeral homes statewide.

• Ann Arbor-based Hile Design LLC was contracted by Talisman Lighting to design the company’s logo and website. Talisman is a lighting company focusing on "green" lighting options such as LEDs.

• McKinley, a real estate investment firm headquartered in Ann Arbor, promoted James Vuong from Web designer and development associate to the director of marketing, media and attraction. In his new role, Vuong will be McKinley's marketing technology leader.

• Ann Arbor-based Logic Solutions Inc. announced May 20 an expansion that included the hiring of regional directors in Arizona and California. Logic Solutions' 2010 growth also includes several new U.S. staff added in the first quarter of 2010 and a the opening of a new Hong Kong office in March.

• Kramer-Triad Management Group, an Associa company with offices in Troy, Novi and Ann Arbor, recently added Carrollton Hills Homeowners Association to its portfolio. Carrollton Hills Homeowners Association is a community of luxury homes being built in Oakland Township. In related news, Kramer-Triad announced that Ryan Dorner has recently earned his Professional Community Association Manager (PCAM) status at the end of April.

• Ann Arbor's Evangelical Homes of Michigan recently promoted one employee and added another employee to its staff. EHM promoted Nancy Swierz, former director of home- and community-based services, to senior director of home and community-based services. Additionally Ruth Proffer joined EHM as the new director of home care services.

• Anna Reytsman and Stephen Warwick recently joined the Ann Arbor office of Edward Surovell Realtors as a sales associate. Jo Ann Ayers and Linda Allen joined Edward Surovell Realtors as sales associates in the Chelsea office.

• United Bank & Trust recently announced three changes in staff. UBT promoted David J. Skaff to executive vice president - business banking, Washtenaw market manager. The bank also promoted Jeff Billig to senior vice president - business banking, Washtenaw market. In addition, Pam Jones-Sexton is leading a new initiative at the bank as senior vice president - professional services group, focusing on developing products and services to serve the specialized banking needs of clients in the health care industry.

• ADR North America LLC, headquartered in Ann Arbor, was named by Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine as one of North America's 100 most innovative supply chain vendors.

• Adams Outdoor Advertising has completed the transition from posting paper advertisements on their billboards to a new paperless system called Eco-Flexx. The new system allows Adams Outdoor Advertising to post advertisements in a completely paperless manner. The Ann Arbor plant is the first in the company to convert all billboards to the Eco-Flexx system, and the company's goal is to have all 12 Adams Outdoor Advertising markets converted within the next year. Adams Outdoor Advertising is headquartered in Atlanta.

• Doug Selby, owner of Meadowlark Builders, was selected by Remodeling magazine to join the Remodeling Big50. The Big50 awards were presented at a dinner May 14 in Alexandria, Va. Each year, individuals and companies in the remodeling industry make nominations in the categories Business Savvy, Fine Design, Industry Impact, Market Wise, Movers & Shakers, Niches, Sales & Marketing, and Teamwork. Selby was selected for the category Movers and Shakers.

• Aubree's Pizzeria and Tavern received the 2009 Best Small Business Award from the Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center, one of 12 businesses selected from more than 15,000 companies. Aubree's Pizzeria and Tavern is a family-owned chain of restaurants headquartered in Ypsilanti. For several years, Aubree's had been operating with three locations, and the chain opened a fourth location in Northville in 2009 that now employs more than 100 people. Aubree's also won a regional small business award in April.

• University of Michigan staff member and computer support pioneer Jim "Griff" Griffin retired May 2. Griffin was the unversity's first micro consulting manager and developed the technical support infrastructures for what is now 4-HELP, the university-wide support hotline. As an Alpha tester for Apple and Microsoft, Griffin had input into the Macintosh OS 7 interface as well as Microsoft Word and acted as the university's "Apple support coordinator" for seven years, keeping the campus abreast of the latest Macintosh advances and opportunities and training the campus trainers.

• Ann Arbor's The Produce Station has chosen Donnie Burton as director of catering. Before coming to The Produce Station, Burton built his own full service catering company in Washtenaw County, Effortless Entertaining, and received caterer of the year in 2009 and 2010 from the U.S. Commerce Association and was named Southeast Michigan caterer of the year several times.

• The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute announced Monday that its spin-off company, Delphinus Medical Technologies LLC, secured $8 million in venture capital to start the commercialization process of SoftVue, an alternative to mammography. SoftVue's lead investor is Arboretum Ventures of Ann Arbor. Two other Michigan venture capital firms, Beringea LLC and North Coast Technology Investors, were also involved in the deal.

• More than 8,000 employees of KeyCorp -- parent company of KeyBank -- participated in the company's 20th annual day of volunteer community service Wednesday at locations around the country. Locally, KeyBank employees joined the Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels to deliver food to those in need.

• At its annual meeting in mid-May, the nonprofit Ann Arbor SPARK elected its board of directors and executive committee for 2010-2011. New members to the Ann Arbor SPARK board of directors are Susan W. Martin, president of Eastern Michigan University, and John Hieftje, mayor of the city of Ann Arbor. New to the Ann Arbor SPARK executive committee are Elliot Forsyth, senior vice president, human resources and operations for ProQuest; JanGarfinkle, managing director of Arboretum Ventures; Leigh R. Greden, executive director of government and community relations for Eastern Michigan University; Verna McDaniel, Washtenaw County administrator; Michael Staebler, attorney at Pepper Hamilton LLP; and Maria Thompson, local entrepreneur who was most recently president of A123's Ann Arbor operations. Ann Arbor SPARK also announced the 2010 officers at its annual meeting. Stephen Forrest, vice president for research at the University of Michigan is board chairman. Tim Marshall, president and CEO of Bank of Ann Arbor, is vice chairman. David Parsigian, a partner with Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP will serve as the board of directors' secretary. Laurel Champion, executive vice president of AnnArbor.com, was selected as treasurer of the board of directors.

• Ford Motor Co. recently announced it will engineer and assemble hybrid battery packs and transaxles in Michigan and expects to add 220 new jobs. Locally, Ford’s Rawsonville Plant in Ypsilanti Township will assemble battery packs for the next-generation hybrid vehicles, moving work to Michigan that is currently performed by a supplier in Mexico.
