People & Achievements in the greater Ann Arbor area, including University Bank and Quinn Evans Architects

The following is a list of achievements by businesses and individuals in the Ann Arbor area:

• Ann Arbor-based University Bank announced June 4 that David Canter and David Little have been elected to University Bank’s board of directors. Canter is director of health care research at the William Davidson Institute and formerly was a senior vice president for Pfizer Global Research and Development. Canter also chaired the State Of Michigan’s Tri-Technology Corridor committee and the Strategic Economic Investment and Commercialization committee, and was a director of a local biotech startup company, Lycera. Little was founder of the Manchester Community Resource Center and was western regional president of Great Lakes Bank before it merged with TCF. He also served as village president of Manchester from 1970 to 1978.

• The American Institute of Architects Michigan honored Ann Arbor-based Quinn Evans Architects with the Firm of the Year Award during a presentation at the annual Celebration of Architecture in Detroit. The Firm of the Year Award recognizes an organization of architects that has consistently produced distinguished architecture for at least 10 years. Quinn Evans Architects is celebrating 25 years in business this year.

TeL Systems (formerly Thalner Electronics Lab) of Ann Arbor, a provider of advanced video, audio and communication solutions, was awarded the $5.6 million contract to supply and install classroom technology systems for the Chippewa Valley School District in Clinton Township.

Jaclyn Kilfoyle has started a new creative consulting business based in Ann Arbor, called Dessert Plate Design.

• Michigan-based real estate firm Re/Max has launched a new website, www.remaxplatinumonline.com. An interactive website that has been under development for several months, Re/Max Platinum Online provides more than just listings and mortgage rates. Visitors to the site can also find trend stories, personality profiles and agent blogs, and will have the ability to network, share information, meet people, ask questions and get answers regarding real estate-related issues.

Kendra Kerr of The Entrepreneur's Source recently facilitated the purchase of Advicoach franchise by David Waymann, a Dexter resident. The Entrepreneur’s Source is an independent business ownership consulting company offering services to individuals interested in self-employment and companies searching for methods of expansion. An AdviCoach specializes in business coaching, advising, mentoring, training and facilitating strategies for companies at various stages of development.

DesignHub Inc., a creative services and marketing firm based in Saline, designed and developed the new website for Newcomers Welcome Service, an Ann Arbor-based company whose representatives and sponsors help welcome people to their new hometowns.

Con-way Multimodal, a division of Ann Arbor-based Con-way Inc. announced Tuesday the launch of Con-way TweetLoad, an online tool that helps carriers find freight loads using Twitter's social media platform. Carriers can now easily access available loads from Con-way Multimodal by following TweetLoad on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ConwayTweetLoad. Carriers following @ConwayTweetLoad can see the latest available shipments.

• University of Michigan biostatistician Roderick Little will join the U.S. Census Bureau as the new associate director for statistical methodology and standards, bureau director Robert Groves announced. Little will lead a new directorate that will focus on enhancing the research and innovation capacity of the Census Bureau. Little is the Richard D. Remington Collegiate Professor of Biostatistics at the U-M School of Public Health and is also professor of statistics and research professor at U-M's Institute for Social Research.

• Alpha Metal Finishing Company of Dexter recently announced the appointment of Laurie Armstrong to sales and marketing manager and Greg Wood as director of business development.

Weber's Restaurant and Hotel, is now offering guests extended stay options to accommodate a growing segment of business travelers, university scholars and hospital guests who require longer visits.

ReCellular, an Ann Arbor firm specializing in used electronics, announced Tuesday the release of comprehensive trade-in programs for both consumers and phone retailers, available at SecureTradeIn.com.

Mobile Sign Language Systems LLC recently won Ann Arbor SPARK's Eastside Innovation Campus pitch competition. Besting four other finalists, Mobile Sign Language Systems won a package that includes up to $50,000 in business acceleration services, a one-year incubator lease at SPARK East and a package of additional startup services including a one-year chamber of commerce membership. Mobile Sign Language Systems developed smartphone software that translates spoken English into a video of sign language in real time.

• Ann Arbor-based Borders Group Inc. announced June 3 that Mike Edwards was appointed president of Borders Group and president and CEO of Borders Inc., the principal subsidiary of Borders Group. Bennett LeBow, who recently became chairman of the Borders Group board of directors, will serve as CEO of Borders Group.
