People & Achievements in the greater Ann Arbor area, including the Michigan Society of Pathologists and Domino's Pizza

The following is a list of achievements by businesses and individuals in the Ann Arbor area:

• Dr. Richard Zarbo, a Washtenaw County resident and chair of Pathology at Henry Ford Hospital, has been elected president of the Michigan Society of Pathologists. Zarbo lives in Superior Township.

Domino's Pizza, headquartered in Ann Arbor, celebrated its 50th birthday on Dec. 9.

Tecumseh Products Co., headquartered in Ann Arbor, recently announced the extension of its Celseon fractional horsepower indoor air-cooled condensing units to include R12 refrigerant compatibility. These new condensing units allow contractors and service personnel to quickly and easily perform R12 system replacements and eliminate the need for refrigerant flush or oil changeover.

Malloy Inc. of Ann Arbor, was awarded the Best Workplace in the Americas designation, Best of the Best 2010, for the company's exemplary human resources practices. A panel of respected HR professionals with decades of experience in the graphic arts industry reviewed the submissions. In order to receive an award, the winning companies must actively show their employees that they care about their work environment, their personal goals and ambitions, as well as the needs of the company. The contest is sponsored by Printing Industries of America, a global graphic arts trade association.

Grant Heitkamp, a digital strategist with Ingenex Digital Marketing of Ann Arbor, recently achieved AdWords Certification from Google.

• The Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce recently announced the winners of its Winter Wonderland Window Decorating Contest. First place went to Artistica, second prize to Dexter Flowers and third to Dexter Mill.

Online Tech, a Midwest data center operator based in Ann Arbor, has added network connectivity from Qwest Communications, providing Online Tech with access to one of the largest, most technically advanced data networks in the world. Online Tech officials said this investment puts Online Tech in a better position to offer more reliable and more robust network connectivity to their clients.

• Three Michigan companies recently received a combined total of $145,000 through the Michigan Microloan Fund Program: FamilyMint, Fusion Coolant Systems and Shepherd Intelligent Systems received the funding to support commercialization of their core products. FamilyMint, based in Ann Arbor, is an online budgeting tool that helps parents guide spending and helps kids develop money management skills. Fusion Coolant Systems, located in Ypsilanti, makes manufacturing processes faster, cheaper and cleaner through the use of advanced coolant and lubrication systems. Shepherd Intelligent Systems LLC, based in Ann Arbor, provides fleet management services utilizing proprietary software tools.

• The West Washtenaw Business Association awarded its Member of the Year for 2010 to Terumo Medical Corp. at the association's Year Ender dinner Dec. 9. Terumo's campus in Scio Township recently completed a $3.5 million expansion of its 55-acre Jackson Road campus because of increased global sales. The expansion included 14,000 square feet in new manufacturing capabilities, testing facilities, and clean room space, in addition to various upgrades to existing facilities. The move came after Terumo in 2005 and 2008 consolidated manufacturing facilities in Mexico, Indiana, and California and shifted the work to Ann Arbor.

• Ann Arbor-based Con-way Freight just completed its 7th annual “Collection for the Troops” campaign in which employees collected and donated thousands of pounds of goods and supplies for employees who are in the National Guard and Reserves and have been deployed overseas. The collection campaign started Nov. 22 and ended Dec. 6. The donations are going to five active duty citizen soldiers currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, with enough for the soldiers to share the gifts with other members of their units.

• Ann Arbor SPARK, the regional economic growth nonprofit, announced Dec. 13 the appointment of Skip Simms as interim president and CEO. In his new role, Simms, who joined Ann Arbor SPARK in 2006, will oversee the organization's efforts to help businesses in the region grow. Simms assumes this role on behalf of the SPARK executive committee transition team, which is overseeing the leadership transition following the resignation of Ann Arbor SPARK president and CEO Michael Finney. Finney recently resigned to lead economic development efforts on behalf of the state of Michigan.

• The Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition awarded more than $1 million in cash and in-kind services on Dec. 11 to the winners of the world's largest business plan competition. The grand prize of $500,000 in cash was awarded to Kalamazoo, Mich.-based Armune BioScience and grand prize of $25,000 for the student portion of the competition was awarded to University of Michigan students Hunt Briggs, Paul M. Davis, Robert Levine and Nolan Orfield for their company ReGenerate. Other companies from the Ann Arbor area who won awards and cash prizes included an AARP Encore Award of $25,000 for Ann Arbor-based Life Magnetics, and Company Sector awards of $25,000 for Ann Arbor's Accio Energy in the alternative energy category, Ann Arbor-based Evigia Systems in the defense and homeland security category and Ann Arbor's Ix Innovations in the products and services category.

E.nopi of Ann Arbor, the first Michigan location of the internationally known E.nopi after-school education enrichment program, is now accepting students. Located at 2411 Oak Valley Drive, Suite 500, in the Oak Valley Office Center, E.nopi of Ann Arbor assists children ages 4 to 14 who wish to excel at or beyond grade level.

U-M Tech Transfer, the university organization responsible for the transfer of university technology to the marketplace, has moved into new offices. Tech Transfer is now located at 1600 Huron Parkway in Building 520, on the east side of Huron Parkway south of Plymouth Road in the North Campus Research Complex.

• Rockin’ for the Hungry, a food and fund drive, met its goal of 200 tons of food for nonprofit Food Gatherers, the food rescue program and food bank for Washtenaw County. The drive was hosted by Kroger on South Maple Road and broadcast live by Ann Arbor’s 107one radio station.

• The Saline District Library recently upgraded to an ultra-fast MeritFiber Internet connection. The fiber-optic connection allows online content, in particular video, to be viewed as intended without interruptions. Saline District Library is part of The Library Network, a public library cooperative serving 65 libraries in southeast Michigan. The library is connected with a fiber-optic connection from Merit Network, a networking provider to Michigan’s education and research community. Merit serves libraries and other organizations in education, government and health care throughout the state.

• On Saturday, Dec. 18, Daniel Burrus will speak to Cleary University graduates at the school’s annual winter commencement as the keynote speaker and recipient of an honorary doctorate of business degree. In 1983, Burrus became the first and only futurist to accurately identify the 20 technologies that would become the driving force of business and economic change for decades to come. Considered one of the world’s leading technology forecasters and strategists, Burrus, the founder and CEO of Burrus Research, is also the author of six books including the international best seller “Technotrends.”

• Merit Network Inc. president and CEO Don Welch has been recognized by Corp! magazine as one of Michigan's Top Chief Executives. Welch accepted the honor at an awards breakfast on Dec. 7 2010 at Michigan State University's Management Education Center in Troy. Under Welch's leadership, Merit Network applied for and was awarded funding for two broadband infrastructure projects as part of the Stimulus Package. Combined, the two projects (known as REACH-3MC) will bring over $100 million in federal funding to Michigan, catalyze $30 million in private sector investment, and create roughly 2,200 miles of fiber-optic infrastructure that will serve all sectors of society. Engineering Technology Associates Inc., a firm specializing in structural analysis for the auto industry, is donating cutting-edge mechanical engineering software to Eastern Michigan University’s College of Technology as part of a new collaboration aimed at preparing students for real-world challenges and jobs. ETA, located in Troy, will also provide in-depth training for faculty members of EMU’s College of Technology, putting the total value of materials and expertise at approximately $300,000.

• Coldwell Banker Weir Manuel recently added a number of new agents to the rapidly growing company. In the company's Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti location, the new agents are Richard Carter, Robert Gay and Michael Jones. Coldwell Banker Weir Manuel is a Birmingham, Mich.-based real estate broker with 11 offices and more than 400 real estate agents in southeastern Michigan.
