The following is a list of achievements by businesses and individuals in the Ann Arbor area:

• Butzel Long attorney and shareholder Robert A. Boonin was recently elected Treasurer of the Labor and Employment Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan. Boonin is based in the Ann Arbor office of law firm Butzel Long.

• The Charles Reinhart Co., based in Ann Arbor, kicked-off its 15th annual Coat Drive Oct. 17. The company will be collecting winter coats through the end of November to be donated to more than 20 local agencies. Throughout October and November, new and gently used winter coats will be collected at all of the Charles Reinhart sales offices as well as all Sunday open houses. OpenhHouse schedules and sales office addresses are available at www.ReinhartRealtors.com. Capital Cleaners, Chelsea Cleaners and Gold Bond Cleaners have donated their services to professionally wash the coats before they are distributed to local agencies. Ray Blush, president and owner of OI Partners-Hugh Anderson Associates in Ann Arbor, has been certified in career management by the Institute for Career Certification International. Blush has owned and operated the OI Partners-Hugh Anderson Associates career management and coaching firm in Ann Arbor for more than 16 years and hosts a series of free job-search seminars for unemployed community residents throughout Livingston County at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Brighton, where Blush resides.

• Visiting Angels Ann Arbor recently announced that Michael Ciupka is the new assistant director for the private home health care company. Ciupka previously held a caregiving position and a marketing director position at the agency.

Ann Arbor SPARK, a regional economic growth nonprofit, recently attracted InTouch Health to locate a research and development operation at Valley Ranch Business Park in Pittsfield Township. Ann Arbor SPARK provided site selection and talent recruitment suppor to the privately held robotics technology company based in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Ann Arbor District Library, has once again been named by Library Journal as one of the top libraries in the country. The journal's annual survey, "America's Star Libraries," recognizing the libraries that are the most heavily used by their communities, has again awarded its top ranking of five stars to the Ann Arbor District Library. AADL was one of only two libraries in Michigan receiving kudos by the journal (Kent County received three stars) and was one of only 85 libraries throughout the U.S. to receive the highest five-star ranking. This is the third time that AADL has received this honor. AADL had total checkout and renewals in 2008 of 8.2 million (rising to 9.1 million in 2009- an 11 percent increase); visits to library buildings of 1.6 million (1.8 million for 2009- a 7.5 percent increase); public Internet terminal usage of 259, 338 (281,310 for 2009- an 8.5 percent increase) and attendance at programs of 52,891 (62,584 for 2009- an 18.3 percent increase).

Encore Online Resale, the e-Bay story formerly located in the Colonnade shopping center, is hosting a grand opening reception for its new location from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 29. The new location, 1958 S. Industrial Highway, is located within the Colonial Lanes Plaza.

• National law firm Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione recently announced that Josh Ney has joined the firm’s Ann Arbor office as an associate. Ney focuses his intellectual property law practice on patent prosecution, litigation and licensing, with a particular emphasis in the areas of chemistry, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical devices. He also practices in the areas of copyright, trademark and trade secret litigation and licensing.

• Ann Arbor-based Borders Group Inc. has appointed Scott Henry executive vice president and CFO, effective Oct. 18. He reports to Mike Edwards, president of Borders Group and president and CEO of Borders Inc.

• The U.S. Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation has selected Ann Arbor-based Thomson Reuters to develop a secure, interactive tool that will enable researchers to perform comparative effectiveness studies without the need for professional computer programming. Comparative effectiveness research evaluates medical treatments to determine which work best in real-world settings, and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act allocated $1.1 billion to support this type of research.

• Carhartt, a global manufacturer of premium work wear, recently announced the appointment of Tony Ambroza of Ann Arbor to the position of vice president of marketing. Carhartt's headquarters are located in Dearborn.

• The Women's Sports Foundation has selected the University of Michigan to establish a joint research and policy center, the Women's Sports, Health, Activity and Research and Policy (SHARP) Center. The new center, which opens in January 2011 at the U of M's Institute for Research on Women and Gender, is the first girls' and women's sports research partnership involving a university and nonprofit. The center will generate interdisciplinary research on issues related to women's sports, health, gender issues and kinesiology.

• The Milan Area Chamber of Commerce nominating committee is currently accepting nominations for “business of the year,” with the recipient to be announced at the annual Christmas Chamber Breakfast Dec. 10. The chamber is also accepting nominations for two individuals to receive Community Service Awards. All forms must be returned to the chamber prior to Nov. 12.
