People & Achievements in the greater Ann Arbor area, including Spaly Group Realtors and K.C. Runciman Landscape

The following is a list of achievements by businesses and individuals in the Ann Arbor area:

• Robert Spaly, former owner of Ann Arbor-based Spaly Group Realtors was installed into the Ann Arbor (Pioneer) High School athletic hall of fame March 25 at a dinner-banquet. He graduated in the class of 1961, and he and his wife Carol have three adult children. They are active in the Ann Arbor First United Methodist Church, where Bob has a legacy of working with the youth of the church. A few of Spaly's past accomplishments that earned him a place in the Hall of Fame include: earning eight varsity letters in three years at Ann Arbor High School in the sports of football, wrestling and track; being named the Michigan High School State Wrestling Champion in the 180-pound class in 1961; being named a three-time All-American wrestler as a student-athlete at the University of Michigan from 1961-1965; and winning the 191-pound Regional Wrestling Olympic championship in tryouts in 1964.

• K.C. Runciman Landscape, located in Washtenaw County since 1946, has merged with Knight Landscape, which has been in business in the greater Ann Arbor area since 1987.

• On March 16, Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation received a $10,000 gift to its One Million Reasons Campaign in support of programs in the Ann Arbor Public Schools for the 2011-2012 academic year. The contribution comes from DFCU Financial on the occasion of its expansion in the Ann Arbor area. DFCU Financial, headquartered in Dearborn, is Michigan’s largest credit union.

• Ann Arbor-based Humantech Inc. recently launched of Ergopoint Office Suite. Humantech’s team of board certified professional ergonomists designed this web-based training, self-assessment and management tool for organizations looking to manage their office ergonomics process locally, nationally or internationally.

• The Ann Arbor Ad Club recently recognized outstanding advertising campagins in its annual "Addy Award. Judges Choice went to Perich Advertising + Design for the "Hiller's TV Campaign"; another Judges Choice, as well as the People's Choice award, went to Pryor Design Co. for the "Leon Speakers Brand Campaign"; a third Judges Choice went to Savitski Design for the "John Cage Brochure"; Best of Show went to Pryor Design Co. for the "Joolze Website"; Gold Addy winners were: Perich Advertising + Design for the "Performance Network Posters"; Pryor Design Co. for "CMH Heli-Skiing Print Advertising"; Pryor Design Co. for the "Joolze Website";
Pryor Design Co. for the "Mobiata Website"; Perich Advertising + Design for the "Bank of Ann Arbor Radio Campaign"; Perich Advertising + Design for the "Hiller's TV Campaign"; Pryor Design Co. for the "Leon Speakers Brand Campaign"; Savitski Design for the "ONCE Festival Guide"'; Savitski Design for the "John Cage Brochure"; and The Exclamation Point for the "Summer Reading Program." The Student Addy Gold award went to Susan Gieseker, a student at Washtenaw Community College, for "Pioneer Sugar Redesign."

• Butzel Long attorney and shareholder Robert A. Boonin, a frequent speaker on labor and employment matters, will be a featured speaker during The Institute of Continuing Legal Education 36th annual Labor and Employment Law Symposium on April 14 in Plymouth. Boonin will provide an update on the Fair Labor Standards Act. In addition, he will participate in a panel presentation where he will discuss wage and hour compliance. Boonin is based in the Ann Arbor office of law firm Butzel Long.

• Two University of Michigan teams have been selected to compete in 2011 Rice University Business Plan Competition. RBPC will award more than $1 million in prizes to aid new startup businesses at the 11th annual competition at Rice University April 14-16. The U-M business plans are for ReGenerate Solutions LLC and Are You a Human?

• National design firm DEI Inc. will design and build a new 3,730-square-foot branch office in Ann Arbor for Lake Trust Credit Union. Lake Trust Credit Union has been operating for more than 65 years and currently operates branches in more than 20 communities throughout Michigan.

• Physicians in West Michigan will get help transitioning to electronic health records and qualifying for federal incentive dollars thanks to a partnership with the Physician Organization of Michigan and the Michigan Center for Effective IT Adoption. The University of Michigan Health System and the Physicians’ Organization of Western Michigan founded POM last year to help physicians and physician groups throughout Michigan remain independent and participate in clinical integration and quality improvement initiatives. Ann Arbor-based Altarum Institute was awarded a grant of nearly $20 million to lead the establishment of M-CEITA, which will assist 200 POWM physicians with the electronic health records selection process. In related news from The University of Michigan Health System, UMHS was named to the “50 Best Hospitals in America” list published annually by Becker's Hospital Review, a bimonthly publication that covers hospitals and health systems. Hospitals included on the list are recognized for prioritizing patient care, producing various innovations in the medical field and raising the bar for high-quality care.

• Ann Arbor's largest office park, Domino’s Farms, won an award at the Eastern Bison Association’s 15th annual “Bison Show and Sale” in Harrisburg, Penn. The office park, constructed in 1985, is built in a pastoral set-ting, with nearly 100 acres dedicated to bison pasture and is also home to the nonprofit educational Domino’s Petting Farm. Todd Crocker, manager at Domino’s Farms, transported 10 bison to Pennsylvania on March 12 and won the Reserve Champion Female prize for a 2-year-old bred heifer, the second place award for all female bison shown.

• The Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Regional Chamber has added Rebecca Woodward as marketing coordinator and Andrew LaBarre as the vice president of government relations.

• LOFT, a division of Ann Inc. offering affordable fashions for women in its stores, will come to Ann Arbor’s Briarwood Mall in June, and Spencer’s Gifts is expected to open a new location in Briarwood in April.

• Michigan Radio, the public radio service of the University of Michigan, held its spring membership drive March 16-23, generating 8500 pledges totaling more than $980,000 from donors across southern Michigan and northern Ohio. Overall, the spring 2011 membership drive saw an increase of more than a 30 percent in total dollars raised over last spring’s campaign. Michigan Radio is a National Public Radio news station serving Detroit and southeast Michigan at 91.7 FM, west Michigan at 104.1 FM, and 91.1 FM in the Flint area. Michigan Radio is a service of Michigan Public Media.

• Adeona Pharmaceuticals, Inc., an Ann Arbor-based developer of medicines for serious central nervous system diseases, announced in March that Dr. Ashley I. Bush joined the company's Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Bush is a National Health and Medical Research Council Australia Fellow and Head of the Oxidation Disorders Laboratory for the Mental Health Research Institute, University of Melbourne.

• Wright Street Design Group is the National Association of the Remodeling Industry’s NARI 2011 Regional Contractor of the Year for excellence in a complete renovation project.
Ann Arbor-based Wright Street Design placed first in the NARI’s annual competition for the Region 4 East Central “Entire House $250,000-$500,000” category. Wright Street Design Group, as one of seven regional winners, is now eligible for the 2011 NARI National CotY Award. The winner of the national award will be announced in April. The award was given to WSDG for the remodeling of a 1960s era split-level home.

• Packard Health has appointed Charles Wilson to its board of trustees.
Wilson is worksite wellness coordinator for the Washtenaw County Health Department and a health educator who presents anti-alcohol, tobacco and other drugs programs to the Ypsilanti, Willow Run and Ann Arbor middle school systems.

• Southfield-based real estate services firm CB Richard Ellis recently appointed Lisa C. Loesel as associate in retail brokerage. Loesel will focus on retail tenant and landlord representation in the Ann Arbor market.

• JC Beal Construction Inc. signed a contract with LM - Atlanta Airport Inc. for the renovation of a former 499-room Ramada Inn located near Atlanta into the newly branded 333-room Holiday Inn & Suites Atlanta Airport North Hotel. The property is located in East Point Georgia adjacent to Hartsfield - Jackson Atlanta International Airport. JC Beal has offices in Detroit and Ann Arbor.

• Auto-Owners Insurance named the Kleinschmidt Agency Inc. of Ann Arbor one of the Top 10 growth agencies for the company in the Eastern Michigan Region for 2010. The agency was recognized at a luncheon meeting in Lansing, and at a reception with all regional associates, where they and other recipients were presented with a plaque commemorating their accomplishment. The Kleinschmidt Agency Inc. has represented Auto-Owners since 1932. Auto-Owners is a Michigan based company founded in 1916 in Mount Pleasant.

• The Veteran Affairs Ann Arbor Healthcare System broke ground March 28 on a new outpatient clinic in Toledo. The new facility will be 66,000 square feet, replacing the 32-year-old building that already exists. The new location is at 1200 south Detroit Avenue. The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System provides services to roughly 10,000 veterans in Northwest Ohio.

• Ann Arbor-based MedHub Inc. has igned an agreement with the University of Cincinnati - University Hospital to deploy the MedHub enterprise residency management system across all residency and fellowship programs, Graduate Medical Education and hospital finance. The MedHub system is an integrated web-based suite of modules developed to improve communication, information workflow and reporting for physician training and residency program accreditation and institutional billing and Medicare reimbursement.
