Pittsfield Township considering Avfuel tax break

By Dan Meisler

The Pittsfield Township Board of Trustees will get a second look Tuesday at a tax abatement proposed for expansion of Avfuel Corp's headquarters on West Ellsworth Road.

The industrial facilities tax abatement would save the company more than $350,000 in township taxes over 12 years. The tax break was first considered by the board in July, but action was postponed after testimony from residents of the Stonebridge subdivision.

The Stonebridge neighborhood is near the Ann Arbor Airport, which has a runway expansion planned that is opposed by the residents.

Avfuel's expansion is not at the airport site. But Stonebridge resident Andrew McGill, in testimony at the July Board of Trustees meeting, suggested that the company may not have been completely forthcoming with a state agency on how many flights its corporate jet would take in and out of the airport if the runway is expanded.

He said the township board should not allow the company to benefit from a taxpayer-funded airport expansion and a tax abatement at the same time if Avfuel is not "doing all its business in the sunshine..."

Avfuel has pulled a township soil erosion permit, according to township planner Paul Montagno, but is waiting for approval of the tax abatement to seek a building permit.

The expansion project would add about 14,000 square feet to Avfuel's existing 19,800-square-foot building. The company's tax abatement application said it plans to add eight employees within the next two years to its existing staff of 146.

Project costs were estimated by the company at $3.9 million.
