Price wars: Meijer lowers prices on 400 toys for holiday shopping season

By Paula Gardner

Here's the latest round in the war between Meijer and Walmart over prices this season: Toys.

On Wednesday, the Walker, Mich.-based Meijer Inc. announced it has dropped prices up to 30 percent on more than 400 popular toys from Barbie to Star Wars Legos, according to a story today in the Grand Rapids Press.

"That means our everyday prices will be knocked down even more," said Frank Guglielmi, Meijer spokesman, in the story. "There will still be weekly sales events through the holiday period."

Prices are good until Dec. 24 - or the inventory runs out. The median savings in 17 percent.

The price cuts follow Walmart's price cuts on 100 toys, a move accompanied by both print advertising and TV ads playing this week.

In both cases, many of the toys hover around the $10 price point - an indicator of how stocking "affordable" merchandise may be a key element of retail success this year as the recession lingers.

Meijer - Michigan's largest retailer - is taking aim at Walmart, the world's largest retailer. A recent article also detailed how the pair are ready to battle over bargain-hunting shoppers this season.
