Rise: Timothy Mayleben
The former CFO of Esperion Therapeutics - one of the most influential bioscience companies in Ann Arbor’s history - will take over as CEO of Aastrom Biosciences by the end of the year. Aastrom has suffered financial and regulator setbacks, but will now focus on cardiovascular drug development. Mayleben, a director at Aastrom, says that strategy is already showing strength.

Fall: Washtenaw Health Plan
The nonprofit health plan that serves about 10,000 of the county’s 37,000 uninsured residents had to freeze enrollment in its program earlier this year. Services continue for those enrolled - and demand is rising for services among those it can’t cover - but the funding situation isn’t sustainable, according to director Ellen Rabinowitz. The health plan has been using reserve funds, operating at a deficit
and needs a better solution, she told county executives.
