Rise & Fall: Fair Food Network and Common Language Bookstore
Rise: Fair Food Network
The Ann Arbor-based nonprofit signed a $40,000 contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to improve urban access to healthy food. The deal is another step toward the Fair Food Network’s rebound after its previous incarnation was wiped out in the Madoff investment scandal. Other grants received this year total over $1.6 million - and while many of those will be paid over time, they allow the mission of the group to continue.
Fall: Common Language Bookstore
The independent book retailer has seen sales fall for several years,
but it’s hitting a critical point this holiday season. Co-owner Keith
Orr is hoping that a fund-raiser raises both money and awareness of the
situation, which could result in the city losing one of the country’s
few remaining stores that caters to the lesbian and gay community.

As the founder and President/CEO of Fair Food Network,I want to thank the local Ann Arbor community for all the support over the past year,as we reorganized. I especially want to publicly thank Jon Carlson and Greg Lobdell of 2 Mission who have stood by us and helped us enormously to bridge from to the new organization with great office space downtown. Many foundations have also stepped up to keep our leadership alive in this critical arena of healthy food access.
