Rise: General Motors Corp. The automaker’s troubles and turnaround plan have been major international news for some time. Less reported is the fact that the company has been quietly hiring. GM won’t put a number on the hires, but confirms that it’s been bringing on engineers. Many are focusing on “green” products - and many are recent college grads, according to reports. It’s a good sign for the state’s engineers and the automaker as it positions itself for the future.

Fall: Akio Toyoda and Congress The president of Toyota and U.S. leaders spent much of last week at a stalemate over whether Toyoda will appear before a committee probing the company’s recent safety problems and recalls of at least 9 million vehicles. Toyoda ended up agreeing to appear. But it looks like a no-win for Toyoda if officials turn the event into political grandstanding. Demanding accountability from Toyota - the company he leads - needs to happen. And Congress needs to find a way to do it so that public safety remains the driving force. Not pontificating.
