Rise & Fall: U-M Survival Flight and Kwame Kilpatrick
Rise: University of Michigan Survival Flight
A crew assigned to the air rescue unit at the University of Michigan Hospitals - with the help of a pilot from Pentastar Aviation - traveled to Haiti as part of worldwide rescue efforts after the island’s massive earthquake. The crew returned to Ann Arbor with two patients and an up-close look at the devastation.
Fall: Kwame Kilpatrick
Southeast Michigan will suffer the taint of Detroit’s former mayor for years to come. So it’s with some pleasure that we see a judge ordering him to pay $320,000 restitution within 90 days or face more jail time. Kilpatrick made a career of living both large and above the law. And seeing his efforts to take his restitution payment down to the single digits on a monthly basis - while living lavishly in Texas - was just plain offensive. He obviously hasn’t learned anything about justice. But the rest of us have, when it comes to him.

I honestly don't get the hero worship that is granted to -- and actively sought by -- the crew of Survival Flight. They are medical and peri-medical staff who have chosen to do some of their work in a helicopter. Why do people find that so sexy? How are they so different from people who perform their work in ambulances? But it's cool that the Survival Flight team made a stop in Haiti and helped a grand total of two people, I guess.
