A longtime favorite Ypsilanti diner has expanded to a new location.

For 25 years, Roy’s Squeeze Inn operated its diner/drive in at 1315 East Michigan Ave., but the owners, Joanna and Chae Chang, recently opened a full service bar and restaurant at the former Kaya Sushi on Ellsworth Road in west Ypsilanti Township.

“It has been along time waiting and this spot opened up, so it seemed like a good time to put new location in,” Katherine Chang, Joanna and Chae’s daughter said.

The new location’s menu is identical to that at the Michigan Avenue location with the addition of cheesesteak hoagies and shakes, but Chang said they will be offering an expanded menu on Ellsworth Road within several weeks. It will include bar foods and other “easy to eat” items such as cheese sticks, fried pickles and jalapeno poppers, Chang said.

The Changs are also considering happy hour specials at their full bar.

The restaurant has been open since late August and Chang said business started off brisk but dropped off since the weather got cold. She said she expects business to pick back up, especially when the new menu is introduced and the family starts marketing the new store.

The location will also benefit their business, Chang said.

“I think it’s far away enough not take business away from the store on Michigan Avenue and still accommodate people coming from Ann Arbor,” she said. “It’s more on the other side of Ypsilanti.”

The Changs are also aiming to open a location in Canton by spring. They are also hopeful contractors will soon complete repairs at Kluck’s, another Michigan Avenue drive-in the family owns, by spring. That restaurant has been closed since a water main burst put it out of commission.

The new Squeeze is at 2283 Ellsworth Rd in the Roundtree shopping center, just west of Hewitt Rd. That's next to Big Lots, in case you didn't know where Kaya Sushi used to be.

The Roys in Milan is *great*. I love the place. I've been going there for over 20 years, and go there whenever I can. I remember the first time I went, and ate a bbq sandwich with slaw while wearing a white dress shirt and tie... The quality is great, and it is very clean. Say Hi to Dave. It is not owned by the Chang's. I hope the Chang's new location thrives.

@TDW waiting at Mich Avenue is half the experience - call ahead if you are in a rush otherwise order and wait and experience all the sights and sounds of East Ypsi! A side note - the place has been existence since the late 60s (when it was called Roy's Palace - or something similar) and even makes it into the famous book "Michigan Murders" as John Collins hung out there while a student... lots of history in the franchise!

Roy's burgers are great. But if service is like anything like it is on Michigan ave make sure you have some time to wait. On a side off topic note, I can only think of one bar thats in west Ypsi Twp other than those in Roundtree

I believe that the owners already owned that building and changed it over to Roys.

How about the one in Milan? Is that still part of the same group? They've got unusually good pork BBQ for this part of the country.

Roy was quite a character, I always felt sorry for the girls that worked for him.
