Snowy start to 'Super Saturday' holiday shopping in Ann Arbor
Will a little snow keep you from shopping?
Retailers hope not - today is forecast to be one of the biggest shopping days of the years in a year when those types of labels really mean something for stores trying to keep pace with last year - or even gain sales.
We're now in the last weekend before Christmas, a time when many gift-givers try to finalize their shopping - and bargain-hunters get into the stores to score the last-minute deals.
Some stores - like Kohl's and JCPenney - have deals lasting into early afternoon. Others, like Meijer, have a day-long sale that includes coupons off gift cards. Still others are looking at making a weekend of it, like Toys R Us and Macys.
A story published by Reuters news service said retailers hope this weekend will generate higher sales than the Black Friday weekend after Thanksgiving. Read that story here.
Meanwhile, one report indicates there are more of us out there who have put off buying gifts. According to the National Retail Federation, "the average person had completed 46.7 percent of their holiday shopping by the second week of December, less than the 47.1 percent completed by this time last year. This is the lowest percentage since 2004, when the average person had completed 46.3 percent of their shopping by the same period."
Delaying shopping until this weekend may not pay off: The Detroit News is reporting that selection in some stores is dwindling. Read that story here.
