Tennessee-based Tractor Supply Co. starts construction on Scio Township store

By Paula Gardner

Construction is under way of a Tractor Supply Co. store on Jackson Road in Scio Township.

Work started on Aug. 2, according to the company, and the Tennessee-based chain hopes to open the outlet in March.

The store will be its 65th in Michigan. The chain bills itself as the largest retail farm and ranch supply store in the U.S.

The location at 7251 Jackson Road is near the I-94 interchange at Baker Road, at the eastern edge of what once was proposed as a 500,000-square-foot retail development called West Scio Center.

Tractor Supply Co. started its effort to build on the property in March through its developer, DMK Development of Muskegon, as the property was rezoned for the single-store retail use.

Since then, Scio Township also approved site plans for the construction.

The store will be 19,097 square feet, including an outdoor display area. It will employ 12 to 17, according to the company.

TSC is growing, according to company data, opening more than 10 stores this year with still more planned.

Don Kettler of DMK told AnnArbor.com in March that TSC had sought a location to build a store west of Ann Arbor for some time, searching between the city and Chelsea for a suitable location.

The general contractor on the project is W.R. Newman of Nashville, Tenn.
