The Wax Loft: A new Ann Arbor salon opened by young entrepreneurs

By Angela Smith

Despite the gloomy reports on Michigan employment rates, there are a number of new businesses coming into Ann Arbor, opening their doors just in time for spring. One of those establishments is The Wax Loft.

The Wax Loft is a new salon on the University of Michigan campus that is run by Rebecca Tober and Stacy Wood, two 20-something entrepreneurs with a real Go Blue attitude: the Wax Loft website promises that their specialists can finish your waxing before you can sing the University of Michigan Fight Song!

As the name suggests, waxing is the specialty for this salon, with an emphasis on brows and Brazilian waxing service. But Tober and Wood, both licensed estheticians, also want clients to  be able to enjoy an escape from daily stress at their salon.

The Wax Loft, located on South University, offers 100% organic facials customized to each clients’ individual skin type, as well as natural nail treatments. They are offering a Spring special; manicure/pedicure combo for $30.

“Our vision for The Wax Loft is to become the go-to place for U of M students and Ann Arborites alike, not only because of the great services we offer, but because of the atmosphere we have created when you walk in our doors.” Wood said. “We believe our clients will see us as a breath of fresh air, so to speak, compared to what’s going on in the world.”

This positive attitude is what drove Tober and Wood to open their doors in the first place. They opened quietly in December 2009, and have been very happy with the word-of-mouth advertising they have received thus far.

“Rebecca and I knew opening a business in this economic climate could potentially be a struggle, but it was a chance we were willing to take,” said Wood.

“We know it is risky, but we are up to the challenge and are hoping to bring some fresh, positive energy into Ann Arbor.”

Great to hear businesses are opening in our state, despite the poor economy. I think we're on the way up, though.
