Top 5 abandoned eyesores in Ann Arbor that need redevelopment

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Craig Schubiner, owner of Georgetown Mall, recently complained to the city about the expansion of Casa Dominick’s - which we find ironic given the status of his empty mall and its potential to harm the Georgetown neighborhood.

Here are our top five candidates for abandoned eyesores in Ann Arbor that need redevelopment just as soon as the economy allows.

  1. Georgetown Mall. It’s a “gimme” on this list, but really can’t be ignored - especially since it’s in the early stages of run-down and has the potential to be saved.

  2. The former Greek Orthodox church on North Main Street. The sign for the Gallery development on the site remains - so do hopes that the building will be torn down before it falls down.

  3. Lower Town. It wouldn’t make a bad urban green space, at least until someone can put together $200 million to build. But the vast fencing around the eight acres is a just a cold reminder it’s in a holding pattern.

  4. The northeast corner of Summit and Main streets. Somebody besides vandals has to have a vision for this little building.

  5. The Shops at Arlington. The vacant land (a demolished car dealership) along Washtenaw isn’t so bad. But the buildings to the west, all the way to Platt Road, symbolize unmet development potential in Ann Arbor.
