Eastern Michigan University alumnus Rodney Slater, a former U.S. transportation secretary, will lead an independent panel to advise Toyota's North American affiliates on quality and safety issues, Toyota's North American president, Yoshimi Inaba, said.

The panel will have direct access to company president Akio Toyoda and will make sure the company's new safety and quality controls "conform to best industry practices," Inaba said in prepared testimony to the committee.

Slater served as secretary of transportation under former President Bill Clinton from 1992-2000. He is a 1977 Eastern Michigan University alumnus.

Inaba made the announcement at a hearing before the Senate Commerce Committee today.
