Tunisian cafe and market plans to open next month on Ann Arbor's North Maple

By Lizzy Alfs

Khaled Houamed and Susan Thomas want to bring North African cuisine to Ann Arbor next month when they open a cafe and market, Concentrate Media reports.

The pair plans to open El Harissa Market Cafe in March, taking over the former Mercado Sabor Latino space at 1516 N. Maple Road.

The 2,200-square-foot cafe and market will sell specialty grocery items and prepared foods such as homemade soups and ice cream in the summer. Eventually, they could incorporate catering and delivery into the business.

The market joins the newly opened Juicy Kitchen, which replaced Maple Gardens Chinese restaurant at 1506 N. Maple Road.

Sounds good. For those who can't wait, Tunisian fare is already available on the west side at Sihem's Deli, located inside Tienda La Libertad Latino market at Liberty/Stadium. North African flavors alongside tacos? Pourquoi pas?

I wish them well with this venture. Many people have worked hard to make a go of something there. Hopefully, with Khaled and Susan, the pizza place, and Juicy, this area will improve. The convenience store and it's clientele bring it down, but that store might not last once Speedway opens. Also.... once again there has been absolutely no activity at the southwest corner of Maple and Miller. Supposedly there was going to be a wine shop and a subway (the latest version of what is "supposedly" going to go there).

And thanks to crack reporting, we now know that this is a joint venture with Zingerman's, who have purchased a herd of Tunisian sheep to supply it with sheep stuffs, I presume?

I didn't see that in the article, but that is great news! I love me some Zingermans. The price lets me know its good.

With the rapid progress on the new Speedway station, things are looking up for this long-neglected corner.

Lizzy, perhaps it's time to followup with the wine shop people. There has been no progress on that place for several weeks now.

And the specialty wine shop. http://www.annarbor.com/business-review/specialty-wine-shop-and-subway-under-construction-on-ann-arbors-north-maple-road/ It has been a long time coming for that corner. I was reading stories from years ago when people were optimistic about the area with the opening of Skyline..it took longer than expected to get some activity though
