The University of Michigan Solar Car Team unveiled its newest vehicle, called “Generation,” Tuesday morning in Detroit.

According to a report from MLive, the new car has been in development for more than a year and will compete in the 2013 World Solar Challenge - a 1,800-mile race across Australia - held in October.

“It’s really exciting to be able to show everyone,” project manager Eric Hausman told MLive reporter Mike Wayland. “We wanted the car to signify the change and keep in mind the 11 cars that have come before it.”

The U-M Solar Car Team has been making vehicles since 1990 and Generation is the first in more than 10 years to employ four wheels, according to the MLive report.

The car was designed and built by a team of about 100 students throughout the year, including a 20-person Race Crew who will take off the fall semester to race the vehicle in Australia.

It was risky to unveil this car Tuesday morning in Detroit. It would have been safer to wait until after sundown so it couldn't be stolen.
