Vahan Basmajian, owner of Vahan's Clothing & Tailoring, plans to expand his shop on East Liberty in downtown Ann Arbor.

Vahan Basmajian has been selling and tailoring men’s clothing in Ann Arbor for over 40 years and has long been known as the guy to see for a quality suit with a perfect fit.

About 5 years ago he moved into the current location at 315 E. Liberty. Now some remodeling of the living space on the second floor has spurred alterations of a different kind in Vahan’s showroom.

“There will be more open spaces in the shop," he said. "It's going to be nice.”

He thinks customers will enjoy the new more open floorplan. The remodel started as a plan to remodel the second floor apartment and fireproof the ceiling, but that turned into an opportunity to update the store and rework the space.

Vahan is eager to have the construction project done; it could not come soon enough. Vahan said the project was anticipated to be done on Aug. 15 of last year. He is now hopeful that the shop will be complete in just a few weeks.

Vahan says he is doing well in this tough economy, but says that is so because he has a couple of advantages:

1. He sells men’s clothing for all budgets; from $400 to $1400 and everything in between.
2. He does the tailoring and custom fitting himself. Customers know they can count on consistent service.
3. He does not have a lot of overhead costs.

How does Vahan’s celebrate the end of the big remodeling project? With a big sale, of course! Vahan says everything in the store is on sale; he is looking forward to a fresh start in the updated space. Look for discounts up to 70 percent.

I just want to reiterate what top-notch tailor Vahan is. He really caters to his customer's needs and the quality of the clothing and service is uncomparable. He really is in a league of his own and I wish him the best of luck in his new renovated building.

This was a good opportunity to use the word haberdasher!

I'm going to have to stop by with some dress clothing I need alterations for, as I've been looking for a good, experienced tailor like Mr. Basmajian. It's refreshing to find a tailor in a nice, clean store too. Most of the tailor shops I've been in are really grungy, dark places that look like they haven't been renovated in 30 years or more.

I hope you correct the spelling of his last name.

Yes, Vahan instatly strikes you as a man of character and integrity. Makes me wish I needed a men's suit. As for Dascola's I am anticipating checking him out for my son's next haircut. I hear the race car seat works like a charm.

This place is a gem. Not the appearance and not the parking, but the guy. He is a real, old World kind of tailor. I'm not sure of this, but I think he comes from several generations of tailors. He fusses until he likes how something looks. I've brought him a lot of clothing bought elsewhere and he gives it a custom look. Don't expect anything fancy, and be sure you to call because he's not always there. A real Ann Arbor classic, like Dascola's for haircuts.
