Ways to improve your job performance in 2013

For those who do not plan on looking for a new job in 2013 (or even those who do), Forbes has published a list of ways to be better at your job, whatever it may be, in the new year.


Improving your communication skills and working collaboratively are both improvements that could benefit you in 2013.

This list is wide-ranging and admittedly at times seems to be rather vague, but it does offer some useful pointers that can help improve job performance. The advice ranges from getting to know your boss better to not overworking yourself.

One interesting tip is to volunteer for involvement in special projects, especially ones that cross various business units. According to the report, building connections with other teams at your workplace can help you gain a greater understanding of what goes on throughout the company.

This Forbes article is just a fluff piece. No mention of politics. No mention of always having your resume out there. No mention of the importance of networking, in and outside of the company. No mention of stretch goals. No mention of having big hair.

"You kiss it! You get right up in there and you kiss it real good!" - Right to Work motto. The cross-functional business volunteer stuff does not always work out. I once had the experience of doing too good a job on a major project like that. At the conclusion, instead of going back to the team I greatly enjoyed, I was drafted (not asked) on to a new team to implement the strategic conclusions from the project. I found another job closer to home, and left a few weeks later. Sometimes it is better to ask than draft.

Notice that missing from the 14 points is any mention of honesty and integrity - typical. Coaching young men and women just out of college to "go all in for the company" isn't exactly an example of how to run an honest business. This is why you can find more honesty and integrity at the local hardware or bike shop ("sole proprietor" businesses) than you can at giant corporations. It'a more about personal responsibility than it is about getting ahead. Remember: Batman is in reality a millionaire - but one who takes personal responsibility and acts against injustice. (We need more Bruce Wayne's in corporate life.) Too bad Bruce feels he must wear a disguise while fighting criminals and criminality.
